Hello from Melville NY--Long Island.

Woo! Okay. Much better. Hey! No tabs! That is what is increasing your CYA! Only get Walmart's Pool Essentials liquid chlorine. If they don't have that, grab as much Great Value regular bleach as you can find. No Clorox and nothing that says scented or splashless. Just the regular.

How much to add for a 40,000 gallon pool?
increase the FC to "24" based on a CYA of 60
Follow the SLAM Process. Please read the article. PoolMath will tell you how much liquid chlorine to add.

To raise your pool from 0 to 24 ppm FC, you will need to add 10 gallons of 10% liquid chlorine. Then test FC and add more LC to get back to 24 ppm every few hours. You should buy 40+ gallons of liquid chlorine to start.

How much to add for a 40,000 gallon pool?
Oh boy, well, here we go. It takes almost five gallons of 10% Pool Essentials to increase the FC from zero to 12. Your SLAM level right now is twice that much (24) so 10 gallons. Once you add that, the FC will fall again quickly and need to be replenished during the SLAM. This is why I mentioned earlier about possible exchanging more water to lower the CYA some more. It's not just the cost of chlorine today, but availability. You will need a lot of it. Chlorine/bleach is the only way to kill algae. So you have a decision - buy anywhere from 15 - 20 gallons of chlorine to get started, or change more water.

Use pool math to be sure, but 20 gallons will certainly be put to good use with your "swamp". Also, keep in mind, SLAM is not a one and done procedure, it is going to require you stay on top of it daily to beat back the green

MY goal is to get the pool clear and then let my new weekly company take over.
Remember, their tactic is "dump & run". Their testing and chemical additions are not compatible with homeowner TFP methods. Once you get the water corrected, adding a little chlorine each day in the summer and perhaps some acid once a week or so is all typically all that's needed.

Ordered 12 gallons of Poole essentials from Walmart. delivery this week.
I'll run down to Walmart and pick up 6 top get this off the ground.
What other chems do you suggest?
