First Ever Pool - Above ground bestway 4.2m slice of heaven

That would have been a warm day for the winter we just had.

Gosh it must get cold where you are.....I think we're going to have a severe winter here this year too... We had a pretty mild one last year, so I am expecting the worst due to the winter you guys had... I think it will hit us hard....And I've a feeling it will be a long winter.... Such a bummer... :-( Australians are obsessed with weather....lol.....

Plumbing these fittings will be a snap, and I've decided on 40mm pvc flexible hose...

This next question is about ball valves..... All these new fittings need ball valves, I'll need 4 x 40mm ones...... I've heard some horror stories about the cheaper ones handles breaking off and some of them cracking.... I've seen ball valves with barrel unions?, I don't know what they do, or what they are for, are there any plumbing or fitting nerds that could shed some light for me...

What are the best, heavy duty ball valves?? I don't mind paying a little bit more if they're going to last..... I don't want threaded, but slide in ones...
If you could please post a link to where I could get them???

My pool has two suctions and one return from the factory. I've also decided to turn one of my suctions into a return as I am adding the skimmer, so that will give me two suctions and two returns... The solar will be plumbed into one of the returns... :)

Done... :)

Holy **** $60 per ball valve for heavy duty, UV stabilised valves.... $240 for ball valves... :-( I think I'll got with the $12 ones...

We had a very cold and bitter winter with wind chill temps below 20° ! It was horrible!!! Hubby and I are over here itching to get into the pool!!!

Good grief that's cold Casey... :-( So jealous you're about to have a huge summer, I've got 6 months to wait.... I hope you get heaps of enjoyment from your pool... :) And I hope hubby gets heaps of therapy from it... Glad to hear he's on the mend.... And quickly too which is a bonus... :)

We get those kind of temps too, but without snow (when it snows here its a freak weather incident), we also get a wind chill factor which makes the temp even lower... :-( I'll take a photo of the mountains when they get snow on them, you can see them from my back deck... They are predicting snow down to our level so maybe this year..... I hate snow... Especially the snow that falls here, its wet and sludgey and turns everything to mud... Not nice powder at all....

I remember doing rounds at work and literally walking on top of the wet snow that turned to ice, it was so cold! Doing rounds at night was so cold, I was wearing my hunting clothes to work just to get through the nights!

I pm'ed you. Don't know if you saw it or not. ;)

Awesome! That seems so much simpler than doing it with water gushing out every time you make a move! lol My return went pretty well but when I got to the intake, I thought my setup was good until what I had covering the intake from the inside failed and water shot out like a fire hose past me and right at the fence! Talk about panic! Only 2 hands and I'm alone. LOL I froze for a minute..OMG OMG OMG!!

I think your way is better. LOL

LOL, I've opened the filter before without putting the stoppers inside the pool to stop the water, and I had water gushing out the filter and I only had my 9 year old son at home to try and put the caps inside the pool, he's not quite tall enough so it was quite an ordeal, he stepped up to the plate though, hanging off the side of the pool trying to place the caps in the return and suctions...lol....

I figured I had the parts so I may as well do it while its just sitting there... I'm not going to cut the skimmer until I've got some water in the pool.... Now I just have to work out the plumbing... I know what its going to look like, I just have to find the parts... :)

Well I have decided to not use concrete pavers underneath the legs of my pool! I've decided to go with treated pine sleepers!

I have read too many horror stories about pavers sliding out or breaking under the weight!

Not only will this be much more stable than concrete, but wood will look better, it will create a frame around the pool, and I won't have to lay as much turf! I am going to get river rocks and insulation for underneath and around the pool! When we decide to move the pool, I'll just buy more river rocks! :)

Just had something great happen..... :) This is a huge event in our house... My 6 year old autistic son (high functioning), is for the first time, outside in the complex playing with the other kids, not trying to run away and is being involved.... Actual playing is a huge step for him... His therapy is obviously working and I can't wait to get him back in the swimming pool this summer... Its given me the boost I need to finish the yard.... Thank you Samson, Mummy loves you.... :)

Hey all, I'm a little bummed this evening.... The Hayward filter and pump that I really wanted for my pool is almost impossible to get here in Australia.... I mean we are the largest island continent, Australians love to swim, and Hayward don't have an online store? Our economy is one of the most stable in the world, I'm shocked at how many companies DO NOT POST TO AUSTRALIA, or have offices here.....

So the next few days, will be spent researching Australian made pumps and I'll see what I can come up with.... So unhappy.... :-(

I have to admit I did cry....:) Thank you Treisarth.... :) We have such hopes for Samson... We are lucky as he has the ability to get better.... He's not fully Autistic, as he lives in our world, not in a world of his own.... He had Global Developmental Delay with Autistic traits, so he will be able to function normally in society, its just going to take a few years... :)

More crappy news this morning.... US Water Systems emailed me this morning with a price for my Stenner Pump and 7.5 Gallon tank... $336.00, I thought that was pretty good.... Till I read the next part..... Postage to Canberra Australia - $824.52 :-( More than I paid for the pool..... :-( Think I may have to just get the pump and get a brewers barrel here in Australia.......

I'm heading over to my eldest sons primary school right now... They are having a mothers day concert... :)

Sorry to hear about the pump.

Have a great time at the concert!

Righto, pump news.... Just spoke to Les at Belconnen Cool Pools... They are the ONLY STOCKISTS of Hayward products in Canberra, 20 pool shops in my town and these guys are the only ones to sell Hayward.........Otherwise I have to deal with Hayward in Melbourne Victoria....(Hope everyone is enjoying my geography lesson of Australia)..... lol...... That's a long way away.... He's going to talk to his guy Simon, who is going to see if they can get me one.... . On the job.... :)

That is AWESOME news about your son!

I am a Kindergarten teacher. I am the one that gets to let the kids try to be in a regular Kindergarten. I have done it MANY times with success. I have only one that could not handle it with me. He needed a much smaller, quieter classroom than mine. At least he got the chance to try.

So I KNOW just how big it is for him to be playing like that! SWEET!

Hugs to you for cheering for him!

Kim
