I've been adding CYA to my pool (based on Pool Math app) and things are coming up as expected. Since I was at 0 CYA, I've needed quite a bit of stabilizer. I used two long tube socks for the first several pounds and then ran across a post that made some sense. Today I've been using 1-gallon paint filter sacks in my skimmer baskets and just filled then with 1 pound of dry stabilizer. The socks took a day or two to dissolve ( was not out there every hour squeezing). These seem to go quite a bit quicker since the water is able to slightly swirl the dry stabilizer and help it dissolve. I'm sure this is addressed in another thread but I found it to be easier than trying to fill socks.

Cheers,

Tim

Your risk is the sack in your filter breaking which dumps all the stabilizer into the pipe and can clog the pipe.

Other people have tried what you did and ended up with a clogged pipe.

Your method is not what we recommend.

Thanks Allen. I was not aware of that risk or did not run across that in the forums I read. It seemed pretty safe provided I did not overload the sack but I can see the risk. I was certainly not trying to steer anyone in the wrong direction. Thanks for the feedback. I'll return to the tube sock.

I got you Timmy. :)

I got you Timmy. :)

NIce. Thanks! I averted disaster and both my mesh bags survived. The one in my deep end skimmer took over 2-hours to dissolve so I believe that there was never too much differential pressure and the granules were swirling around. I think more than a pound in s skimmer would be a very bad idea (at least for my pool). I like the old t-shirt method. I unfortunately am currently attached to my t-shirts (my wife just just "helped" me clean out my drawers just recently.)

Thanks for the tip!!!

Cheers,

Timmy

I stretched my skimmer sock over a clean dry tall measuring jug, dumped stabilizer in, then tied up the sock and it was very easy. I used thin rope and tied a slip knot around the sock so it can't come undone in the water. Then I hung it inside the skimmer just above the basket. Worked overnight, didn't have to squeeze the sock. :)

I first put granules in skimmer in a skimmer sock, thinking I was going to save some time. It sure dissolved quick, but my guess is that the granules can dissolve enough to get out of the skimmer sock, but still be large enough that my DE filter caught them. I had a heck of a time getting the CYA to measure accurately for almost a week.

I then moved to the more tried-and-true method of tying the skimmer sock to a pool pole and hanging in front of a return. I just leave it overnight and by morning, it's gone. No squeezing or mess.
