I'm installing a new Pentair DE and need to use an adapter kit. Do I need to PVC glue the coupling to the inlet / outlet of the filter, or is that a dry fit?

All pool plumbing should be glued.
A DE filter should have an MPV connected to it with unions. Then your PVC pipes are glued to the ports on the MPV.
