Converting to Salt based pool?

A 'salt' pool is a chlorine pool and a chlorine pool has salt in it. The only difference is a 'salt' pool uses a salinity of around 3000 ppm so the SWCG can create the chlorine you need each day. The cost of the SWCG will equate approximately to the cost of adding liquid chlorine to your pool on a daily basis over the life of the SWCG.

Your pool size and other pool equipment information is needed to provide a reasonable recommendation. Please fill out your signature.

B,

I personally like saltwater pools much more than I do traditional chlorine pools.

They are easy to maintain, make their own chlorine, and I like the feel of the water.

I like not having to buy Chlorine Tablets, Powdered Shock, or Liquid Chlorine.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I'll second Marty's comment except the cost break even point. It really depends. It depends on how much you pay for chlorine, what cell you get and how much chlorine its rated to produce and the conditions of your pool. Lets just yank a number out of the air. Say the SWG and controller costs $1500, how many years does it take to go through that much chlorine? 5, 10? for many people that is about 5 years worth of liquid chlorine ($300/year/12 mo/5 bux a gallon=5 gal a month... zat too high? too low for you?). So if the break even point is at 5 years and if the cell lasts longer, then that it free chlorine! right? My first cell last for 9+ years, that means I got 4+ years of free chlorine. When the cell is depleted and you have to get a new one you don't have to buy a new controller.. just the cell. That is cheaper.. lets say $500. That means you will break even in the second year and every year after that is more free chlorine. My second cell is at 7+ years.. I have been in free chlorine land for 5 years already with the second cell... And I am not even factoring in the time savings and convenience. Do I think it's worth.. HECK YA!

You need a SWG rated for at least 35k gallons, but 40k would be better. You always want to size your SWG for at least double your pool volume so it doesn't have to work full bore 24/7. By oversizing, you can make the amount of chlorine you need daily by keeping the output percentage of the SWG as low as possible, thus adding life to the cell plates. Most are rated for 10,000 hours of chlorine generation. There are a few that are 15,000.

If you don't have automation, your best choice might be a model from Circupool. They have several different models with different bells and whistles. I would suggest either the SJ45 or the RJ45 for you. You get the full warranty with a DIY install, which is not the norm with most of the other manufacturers.

If you have automation, you might want to just consider the Pentair IC40 because it is more user friendly with the automation.

Thank you. I have Pentair Easy touch control system. Do I need to purchase power center also or does the cell unit can connect directly to control system?

B,

If you have an EasyTouch, you need to buy the IntelliChlor IC40 plus power center.. Here is a link to the product...

Show us some pics of your equipment so we can see how easy (or hard) it will be to install the cell.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Attached are the pictures, do I install the cell after the existing chlorinator? Do I keep it or remove the existing chlorinator?

B,

In "theory" the SWCG should go between your Return Valve and the heater.. This way the SWCG is chlorinating both the Spa and the Pool. That said, it appears that you can't shut off your spillover, so installing the cell in place of the tab feeder will work just fine.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Replace the check valve with a two way valve internal you can control the spillover with the easy touch

Thank you very much for all your suggestions, very helpful.
I am confused about the connection as shown in the picture. The check valve at the bottom line goes to Spa? Pool goes left side and Spa right side?

Most people take the chlorinator out.. and put it there. I mean you wont need a tab chlorinator with a SWG they are redundant.. and trust me you'll never use it as a back up even. There is more than enough room to install it in that run of pipe.

Can you post a pic of your controller for Jim?
Picture of controller. Can you please advice where I need to connect the power center to easy touch controller? Thank you.
