I am converting our pool to an SWG. After much time on this forum and its recommendations and reviews, I have narrowed it down to CircuPool. I have a 17-18k gallon pool south facing in the Central Florida sun/heat. My choices are between the CircuPool RJ-45 PLUS and the RJ-60 PLUS. Is the RJ-60 overkill? Will running the 60 extend the cell life since it won't be working as hard? WIll it produce too much chlorine at lower levels? Isn't bigger better? What would the negatives be? Any help and advice would be much appreciated by this new pool owner.

Welcome to TFP!

I guess if you compare the specs vs price, the RJ-60 is a great deal. It produces 55% more claimed chlorine gas per day (3.1 vs 2.0 lbs) for less than 15% more in price. I kinda wish I would have done it. Make sure you take advantage of the $4 upgrade at discountsaltpool.com. The unit has a pretty good reputation here.

Other than price and the risk the unit will fail before you get all the life out of it, I can't think of any downsides.

While your here, enjoy some light reading:

. Is the RJ-60 overkill?

No. It is a bit more then 3X your pool. You will likely run it around 25% - 30% depending on your pump runtime.

The cell life will be greater because it has more chlorine generating capacity with larger plates. It has nothing to do with the cell not working as hard.

WIll it produce too much chlorine at lower levels?

The RJ series can be adjusted in 5% increments. Between that and adjusting your pump runtime you have the tools to dial in the FC generated daily.

Isn't bigger better?

Up to a point.

Depends how you run the cell.

What is your pump runtime?

I run the pump for about 12 hours, decreasing the RPMs every four hours until finished. Not sure if that's the best routine yet....

Running the RJ60 for 12 hours per day in your pool at 30%-40% would generate 3-4ppm of FC/day.

Sounds like it would fit well.
