Brand New Pool Cloudy— Help I’m Desperate!

And hats off to poolstored! You’re a champion!
Nah, stubbed my toe on this one.

Thought five times about the filter...lots of ambiguous signs...remote troubleshooting, new pool owner in distress...taking apart a sand filter is daunting (and they didn't even have Magic Lube II on hand!), when already overwhelmed...I also thought the builder couldn't possibly F* up a filter install. When I saw the returns spewing, I knew. OP is smart. She/They will have no problem maintaining this pool.

Either way, Sunday will be epic!

Ok CYA is not dissolving! Been in the pool since 8 AM and hubby wants to swim lol. Can we just open up the T-shirt and spread what’s left? And how long does he have to wait to swim? Getting closer!

No. Squeeze it a bunch, it should come out. Go ahead and dose FC for CYA 50 and swim (hint...8) Link-->FC/CYA Levels

Get in the pool, swim, and squeeze, squeeze, squeeze....

If it is not coming out, switch to a different/thinner T or put it in socks and tie them off.

Do not spread in the pool, they are acidic and can stain/bleach the pool.

If you do get any granules on the bottom, vacuum them up with the pool blaster, or vacuum to filter. Don't let the granules sit on the pool surface.

Congrats!!!

Did you chlorinate during the day? Are you still in range for your FC? My guess is that between the sun and swimmers you chewed some FC.

Post up a set of numbers!

Did you get your salt kit?

I added chlorine this AM. We are going to swim again tonight, and I thought I’d wait it should I do again before we go in? Or should I do now? Gonna add my calcium chloride after everyone is done. And ppl wanna swim tomorrow afternoon, so I figured I’d add the salt tomorrow night? Got the kit!

Good choice. Generally, add calcium on a day when you don't add anything that changes pH, like muriatic acid.

Test salt, now, add salt now. Only takes 10-20 minutes to dissolve by brushing. Would be nice to get it in and circulate 24 hours, then you can turn on cell tomorrow. Swimming will help circulate it!

You tested 6.5 earlier, with all the sun and swimmers, you are likely low for your CYA. This is the LC chart. You need to stay in range all the time. When you are going to swim, I would dose to the top of the range or higher. I would have started today with 9-10 FC.

My guess is that you are close to min at this point. After your test now, I would dose back to 8-9 before you swim again. No need to wait more that 5 minutes after you add and brush to swim.

Ok so I tested and added chlorine before I saw your comment on the salt. 😂 So I just dosed to get to 8 FC. Add the salt now too or wait since I jumped the gun??

CH and TA are not going to change unless you add CH or use muriatic acid. No need to test those every day. CYA weekly. pH and FC daily.
Also, unbeknownst to me, hubby took the CYA shirt out yesterday & forgot to put it back in. The shirt was too thick for it to come out, so I cut off the outer layer and squeezed it til it all got in. How long will it take to get an accurate CYA reading?

You already did, no? Your logs show CYA of 50. Is that not a result that you got? Can take 24-48 hours. I would only log actual results as results. Never log additions as test results.

You got below min...recipe for algae... 😜 Do you understand the need to stay in range now? You can even test during a swim.

You also learned with CYA of 50, you can use 3FC in 6 hours with sun and swimmers.

CYA was 50 this afternoon but then I found out about not all of the CYA going in. I thought it took 24ish hours to get accurate after it all went in?

It CAN take up to 24-48, doesn't mean it will. The point is, after adding CYA, wait 48 hours to do final test before adding more.

Did you understand the point about FC?
