We're getting a warm front meander through this morning, and it's +13C/55F going up to 18C/64F with rain, so the Mrs. is going to open the windows at home, and replace all that stale winter air, with some fresh spring air. I think next week, I'll start working on the spring tune-up for the bicycles....View attachment 129760

I wish but not here in Florida. FSU and UF have already stated they are cancelledHigh school/college graduations will simply be put off, probably occurring in the summer or fall.
Assuming unavailability of liquid chlorine why would you have have to partially drain the pool if you used cal hypo since it contains no CYA? Also CH is not normally a problem for pool liners but how about for gas water heaters? Would it tend to gum up the pipes over time?Calcium hypochlorite powder or pucks are viable options. It will require more careful monitoring of your CH and/or CYA level and could mean occasional partial drains. However, if obtaining enough chlorine for regular chlorination is a problem then the SLAM process is not an option.
First though I would look in to other sources of liquid chlorine. Pool stores try hard to convince people that their product is completely different than bleach, so it might survive the panic buying. It might cost more, but will be more concentrated so at least there will be fewer jugs to carry. That said, it might not come up. There seem to be very specific (and incorrect) panic purchases happening and I haven't heard of bleach being one of them. So here's hoping.
My son is being very quiet, kind of depressed over it. It scary for us, think about them! They haven’t been through events like 911 before so don’t know what to expect.I wish but not here in Florida. FSU and UF have already stated they are cancelledI was going to both of these as some of my former Kdg. students are graduating this year. The families are hoping to do something at home for these kids.

Keep an eye on your kids
Once the calcium is dissolved in the water, there is no danger. It *may* build up scale on the salt water cell or your walls but its not the same problem as putting dry calcium tabs in contact with trichlor pucks. They just are incompatible together on their own.
As to why we suggest a drain- it speeds up a clean up job when a majority of the water is fresh and algae free. This dilutes the remaining algae water and makes a SLAM go much faster. You've removed most of the green problem.
