Bleach v corona virus - backup plan?

how is the lockdown in Calf affecting you guys out west? I suspect it's coming to more states..I work for a television station but in IT and they gave us letters saying we can travel is needed " just in case" we have a lockdown.

High school/college graduations will simply be put off, probably occurring in the summer or fall. What may be a long term result of this, is that instead of 15 guys taking 3 days flying around for a 15 minute meeting to decide to hold a meeting, they will continue the new practice of having a conference call or meeting on Zoom or Skype. Some people will continue to work from home, some will work from home certain days, and at the office other days, reducing traffic and pollution. We may continue to be more aware of what and who we touch, we may see a massive reduction in colds and flu that spread in a similar fashion. One thing to note, it is now spring, and if your healthy, get outside and get some fresh air....

I think I'll pass today...
We're getting a warm front meander through this morning, and it's +13C/55F going up to 18C/64F with rain, so the Mrs. is going to open the windows at home, and replace all that stale winter air, with some fresh spring air. I think next week, I'll start working on the spring tune-up for the bicycles....

If you are in the south use your hair nets or skimmer socks..Pollen is out :( My nose is swollen and my hair nets were yellow yesterday.

Unless you are from the south picture so much pollen your dark car turning completely yellow overnight :) That happens every year around this time

Calcium hypochlorite powder or pucks are viable options. It will require more careful monitoring of your CH and/or CYA level and could mean occasional partial drains. However, if obtaining enough chlorine for regular chlorination is a problem then the SLAM process is not an option.

First though I would look in to other sources of liquid chlorine. Pool stores try hard to convince people that their product is completely different than bleach, so it might survive the panic buying. It might cost more, but will be more concentrated so at least there will be fewer jugs to carry. That said, it might not come up. There seem to be very specific (and incorrect) panic purchases happening and I haven't heard of bleach being one of them. So here's hoping.
Assuming unavailability of liquid chlorine why would you have have to partially drain the pool if you used cal hypo since it contains no CYA? Also CH is not normally a problem for pool liners but how about for gas water heaters? Would it tend to gum up the pipes over time?

I wish but not here in Florida. FSU and UF have already stated they are cancelled :( I was going to both of these as some of my former Kdg. students are graduating this year. The families are hoping to do something at home for these kids.
My son is being very quiet, kind of depressed over it. It scary for us, think about them! They haven’t been through events like 911 before so don’t know what to expect.
Keep an eye on your kids

Once the calcium is dissolved in the water, there is no danger. It *may* build up scale on the salt water cell or your walls but its not the same problem as putting dry calcium tabs in contact with trichlor pucks. They just are incompatible together on their own.

As to why we suggest a drain- it speeds up a clean up job when a majority of the water is fresh and algae free. This dilutes the remaining algae water and makes a SLAM go much faster. You've removed most of the green problem.

I dunno.... yes its a shame in the immediate but think of all those teens back in the 40s who went without or dealt with far more than we'll ever imagine. The challenge strengthened them. They often came up with alternative ideas. Lets hope we'll all come out of this strengthened, not scared.

I have learned it’s almost cheaper to do a partial or full drain if the water gets bad. I don’t have to worry about floating, we are up on a hill

It certainly can be. We always have to weigh the options. Some folks are on wells and cant count on them to refill an entire pool. Others have water shortages due to drought and have to work with the water they have.

The TFP methods are flexible in such instances. We will help folks in any way we can deal with their limitations.

Ok I am officially mad, they can close the bars and Restaurants and sporting events but now Hilton head has closed the beaches! :) joking but we go for spring break every year and have been for years but not now

Well, the way things are going, I think we'll be getting a SWCG before we even set up our pool. That way, no need to worry about liquid chlorine.

I'll pop in the initial chlorine in using the massive amounts of dichlor the previous owners of our house left for the spa (which we use hardly any of for reasons TFP people are quite aware of), then fire up the SWCG and just keep a close eye on the FC. Keep it good and I should be able to get through the entire year without a drop of liquid chlorine.
(y)

EDIT: This plan assumes SWCG's don't sell out shortly because everyone is buying them cause they can't get liquid chlorine. Hmm...maybe I need to buy that SWCG now. Lol
