Best way to use black pool cover

Has anyone tested out the black pool cover that stretches over the side of the pool?
Is it better for the black plastic to be laying on the water directly or that there should be air pockets with heat from the sun?

That sounds like a winter cover. If you're looking for a warmer pool, you want a solar cover. Looks like bubble wrap, comes in see through blue or clear, and dloats directly on the water surface. These let sunlight into the pool which heats the water directly, and actually will allow more heat gain than a black cover.

Yes to a degree.It keeps water evaporation down during the night.
