Best way to lower TA with a SWG pool?

Hi folks:

First year pool owner with 32K gallon, gunite pool with SWG.

All chemistry values are in line with the suggested levels on this site for a plaster pool with SWG....EXCEPT for my TA.

TA should be 60-80 and in reality I'm about 140-150.

I know you can lower TA with muriatic acid. My question is, do I need to aerate to increase PH so I add more Muriatic Acid?

Or will the normal PH rise that I get with my SWG do enough to raise PH?

You can aerate as needed. Your SWG may increase pH slightly with aeration inside, but may be slow. If you do find that your pH is rising too fast over the course of the week, you can continue the muriatic acid treatment followed by aeration as noted on the TFP Pool School - Lower Total Alkalinity page. Hope that helps.

Before you try changing the TA, be sure you have a reason. If pH is difficult to maintain at a low enough level, it might be worth lowering your TA. If pH control isn't a problem, don't worry about TA.
