Anyone know what the "fins" on an old dolphin are for?

My Dolphin Supreme M4 has those black fins on one side, but not the other. In honesty, they may have never been there. Or they came off at some point. Does anyone know what they're for and why I would care about them? Or how they would impact it at all if missing on one side?
