Afraid Of My Pool

Question on this process, why does the pool need to be balanced before doing the slam step?

Post a full set of test results on your new water.

You want your CYA at 30 and your PH between 7.2 - 7.5. Need to get PH on the low end because once you raise CL above 10 you can't get accurate PH readings. CH and TA levels don't matter right now.

Then if CYA is 30 add CL to get FC above 12 and maintain it there. See if you get any CC in your tests and how well your pool maintains the CL level. The question is how long you should do the SLAM Process for. If no CC and you pass an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test then I would say 48 hours.

Thank you so much.

Here are the results this a.m.

Changed filter cartridge
We are done removing the salt.

CL - 0
PH - 7.2
CYA - Under 30, tests doesn't show number below that.
TA - 40
Calcium: 80

We have to go out for the entire day, what should we do. Pinch A Penny opens up in a hour. We do not have any stabilizer. Can we add the chlorine now and add the stabilizer tomorrow am, or should we try and get the stabilizer and then add the chlorine. Small time frame this morning. Water is looking on the green end this a.m.

Also how much stabilizer should we put in?

See latest reply. Not sure what to do this a.m with the stabilizer. We have to leave shortly.

Put the CYA in a sock hanging in front of a return. and bring the FC up at the same time. You can go ahead and bring the FC up to SLAM level. For now we will call the CYA at 20 IF it got cloudy at all. If it is not cloudy at all call it 10 and go from there.

Bet you are already gone for the day...........but here is my answer.

Me? I like to hang it in front of the return. I worry about the sock blocking the skimmer if it shifts. Others don't worry as much as I do so.........

How much to add...........use Pool Math (do you have that app yet?) Pool Math Call your CYA 10 and go from there.

Okay, we dumped a 2 gallon jug of the pool yesterday before we left and put 1/2 lb of CYA in skimmer. We were afraid to put more CYA as did not know at the time how much. It has now been 24 hours since we started.
The results this a.m. are

CL: 12
PH: 7.4 - 7.5
CYA: Still under 30
TA: 50

What should we do now, add more CYA? How long do we maintain the high chlorine level during this process?

Did you add 2 gallons of liquid stabilizer (CYA)? If you put the CYA powder directly into the skimmer (not using a sock), that is not recommended, and it will take a week for some of it to show up. Some of it will have settled in the bottom of your cartridge filter housing and will never show up.

Follow the SLAM Process process. Do a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test in a night or two.

8 oz of CYA powder adds 5 ppm CYA to your pool. Use Effects of Adding Chemicals, PoolMath.

I suggest you add 24 oz more of CYA powder to your sock. Then assume you have 30 ppm CYA in the water for FC/CYA purposes.

Once all the powder is dissolved in the sock, wait 24 hours and test CYA.

Perfect. Thanks so much. One more question. Pool hasn’t been vacuumed in two weeks. Should we do now and scrub down or not. The slam process said to do so, but with adding the CYA should we hold off?

I guess this is two questions. Continue to maintain chlorine level at 12 until CYA is dissolved?

Brush at least daily during SLAM.

Yes, maintain the FC at 12 ppm. That is part of the SLAM (Shock Level and Maintain). See [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. With a CYA of 30 ppm your shock level is 12 ppm FC.

Long story short, he did not think it was an allergy and is sending me to a dermatologist, who I am seeing tomorrow. Felt it was more of a skin irritant issue. He did not know of any way to test the water sample. Told him the whole story and was very interested and felt might be on to something, however the dermatologist was the one to see. Ugh. So, onto to the next.
We are night two of the slam process. Water looks good, very clear. We did add more of the CYA as recommended by mknauss and tomorrow will be another day. We also scrubbed all sides and the bottom today as well. Did not vacuum.
Will post test results tomorrow.

I do *like* the idea of irritant over an allergy...........not that I *like* you hurting and not being able to use your pool.......but hopefully the new one will have some more ideas how to keep this from happening again.
