I keep a really cheap kitchen strainer, with plastic handle, near the pool; one that will fit into the skimmer with a little wiggle room. With pump still running I use it to catch floating stuff in skimmer and/or take some of the stuff out of the basket, before removing it, when there is so much stuff that I can't easily break the vacuum caused by the clogged sock or basket alone. Walmart has the really cheap ones and more expensive ones, too, so you have to spend some time looking. This is another inexpensive gift I give to pool owning friends.
