Hello everyone, new pool owner here and the previous owner told me to run the pump 24/7. So I have a couple of questions, is this necessary and is there much of a rate difference to run 8-10 hours per day vs 24 hours for a whole month. Look forward to hearing the responses. Thanks.

Yes & no. Ha. It is not mandatory to run 24/7. That depends on the needs of the pool, amount of debris that may land on the surface, etc. I leave my pump on low speed 24/7. It's just easier that way for me. Don't be fooled by turnover recommendations as that has no bearing. Mixing chemicals, vacuuming, and keeping the water's surface cleann are most important. If you choose to run less time, that's fine. See the link below for more info.

K,

We have a lot of people here that run their pool pumps 24/7... But... all of them have VS pumps, not single speed pumps.

I run my 3 HP VS pump 24/7, most of the time at 1200 RPM, for less than $20 bucks a month.

What do you think it costs you to run your single speed pump for a month?

Thanks,

Jim R.

Based on the information given, you have a 1hp Century motor, likely on a Whisperflo since you also have a Pentair filter. Based on the rating plate numbers it costs you between $0.17 & $0.19 an hour.

I'm not sure. Just bought the house with a pool and have not been here a month yet. :)

K,

At .18 cents an hour, that is $4.32 per day and about $130 bucks a month..

Most single speed pool pumps are pretty loud... :(

My 3 HP IntelliFlo is so quiet, that when I first installed it, I had to touch is just to make sure it was actually running.

If I built 100 more pools, they would all have large VS pumps, running 24/7. Not something I would do if I had a single speed pump.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I run mine about 19 hours a day - mostly because our electric company has a 'summer rate' from 2pm to 7pm during weekdays, where we pay almost double for power. So, I run midnight to 2pm, off until 7pm, then on again until midnight. That said, I think it comes out to something stupid like 30 cents in savings...so about $6 a month...versus running 24x7.

We calculated at the slow speed for 19 hours, the pump uses less power than the old pump did in 5. We've noticed no decrease in water clarity or balance, so for us, that works. Our nice shiny-new SWG is set to provide enough chlorine in that time frame, and the heater is able to run overnight where most of our heat loss occurs. During the afternoon, when we're most likely in the pool anyway, the pump is off, and it's quiet (although my new VSP is super quiet anyway). So, bottom line, the schedule works for us, and I can feel like I got one over on the Man not running in their 'premium' timeslot ;)

I also run my 3hp IntelliFlo 24 Hours a Day.

Regular speed is 1200rpm, using 125 Watts for 15 hours. I have great skimming at this speed and it is more than enough for my SWG, which starts producing at around 800RPM.

High speed is 2200rpm, using 600 Watts for 4 hours. This is for the suction side robot to vacuum the pool floor.

And finally, low speed is 900rpm, using 70 Watts, for 5 hours during peak electricity from 4pm to 9pm.

Total energy consumed is about 4.6kWh, equating to about $0.85 per day / $25.50 per month.
