14 years of pool stores and failure...

If you can't be there with it all day, DE wouldn't be a good idea at this stage. But if you have a day off, or time for watching it frequently it would be ok. Overall, it would be best to wait until youre clearing the last end of things to speed the clearing of dead Algae. DE in a SF does work though, and quite well. I use it for the fine dust we have here, and it really helps.

Makes sense. I work from home so being around isn't a problem, however I'll wait until the SLAM is done and the worst of the cloudiness has basically cleared so the DE can more or less just polish it off. I don't want to start getting ahead of myself and cause unnecessary problems.

The bad part is we are all just as eager to see the results lol

Now on the cya test.....do NOT stare. Just GLANCE in. If you still see the dot at the first line pour to the next line and GLANCE in. You can pour the water back and forth as many times as you need to.

Have we even discussed a Speedstir yet? I bought mine right away, but I was in mid-move and couldn't locate a screwdriver to install the batteries. Manually stirring the vials... I can't believe I lived like that!

Lol, the Speedstir is probably going to be ordered within a week or so. I honestly want to take some time and do it manually so that a) I'm comfortable doing it if needed, and b) so I can fully appreciate the awesomeness of the magnetic tornado.

In other interesting news, my pool has a drain, and I can see it!

Well, the results are in! Lesson #1 learned...I should have only done liquid chlorine until the test got here. Those test strips read 0 CYA and they were not right at all.

FC 30.5 (Wowza)
CC .2
PH Not Tested
TA 100
CH 600
CYA 90

I really hoped I did the CYA wrong, so I redid it several times, each time with the same result. Ugh, well...guess its time for a 50% drain. Maybe it'll help lower the CH a bit too. The real trick is figuring out where 50% is. I know proportionately the deep end is only 1/2(ish) of the pool so I shouldn't have to go nearly that far. I'm going to hypothesize about 3.5 feet or so.

FC isn't even high enough at this CYA, and it seems absurdly high. Unless someone thinks I screwed something up and should re-test, I'll go get everything prepped to start the drain tonight.

I'm a bit bummed, wasn't totally expecting this, but at least I know I have the knowledge and support to do what needs to be done. I'm sure Leslie's could sell me a $70 bottle of Phosphate remover to fix all of this too. (#sarcasm)

Looks like straight out of the tap the CH is 350.

And yeah, that was back to the sun outside. I just re-did it to make sure. With only a glance the dot is gone at 90. Even if I try to see it at 80, its nearly impossible.

It will just give the plants a drink, perhaps unfortunately for you this time. :p

Don't try too hard to see what the Cya test tells you. Its a little hard at first because you want it to be precise. Its turbidity, so there is always a little give. Just takes a little getting used too. If you think it's 85-90 call it 90. Just plan on a 40-50% drain, and you can do it in increments or all at once. Sorry you have too, but if you've read much, you know it happens to all the faithful pool $tore customers. #returnsarcasm.

Nothing wrong with the ones who will sell you bulk Chlorine to go though. Count your blessings when you have that at the ready.

Thanks for the updated info!

~45% drain complete, just finished refilling a short while ago

New test results:
FC 13
CC .2
PH Not Tested
TA 140
CH 475
CYA 55

CYA is a bit higher than I was aiming for but based on all my reading around here may serve me well for the Phoenix summer, yeah? Lots of sun on this pool.

Water condition: 90% clear, some haziness still remains but the bottom of the deep end is clearly visible. Overall color is good.

Next steps? Since I still haven't completed a SLAM, and I can finally actually be on one, my intention is to get FC to SLAM levels (Goal FC 22, add 193 oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine), and do an OCLT tonight. Guessing I shouldn't worry too much about the TA until post-SLAM?

Pics below, don't mind the dirt. Haven't had a chance to brush/vacuum since the refill completed and some stuff settled out of the water during drain. Hey....at least you can see the dirt on the bottom! :goodjob:
