    High CYA and Algae

If you fail the overnight test, allow your levels to drop down under 10 ppm before you test again. There is a lot of testing error at higher levels given the amount and frequency of drops from the test kit. I would not put too much emphasis on the greenish tint. Look at the water through a...

    High CYA and Algae

As Tim mentioned, please take a picture daily around the same time in the same area. Your eyes can be deceiving and lighting will throw colors off. My white steps sometimes look like something is on there (depending on the sun/overcast), but when I go under water with goggles, nothing. Trust the...

    High CYA and Algae

The reason why you lower the PH to 7.2 is that chlorine will raise your PH, and as it burns off, become PH neutral. The SLAM levels, which are higher will keep your PH higher as well. Therefore, lowering your PH will maintain the level accordingly. Please note that with AGP (Above Ground Pools)...

How often to brush and vacuum?

Above Ground Pools are notorious for having circulation issues given the return eyeball and skimmer housing are close in proximity. Having "junk" in the pool will increase your chlorine consumption (slightly), and possibly stain the liner in the longer term. I would suggest you start with...

Algae on solar cover from rain water

Excellent idea. One has to find what works best for them. The cover is a real PIA to take off (no matter how you look at it), but the way I look at it is that 3 hours less on the heater daily, saves $3 per day, and possibly less pump run time. I like your reel and idea. Thank you.

Algae on solar cover from rain water

I understand that you used the eyelets, but what exactly are you doing? Do you have rope to pull out of the pool, etc? The easiest way I found is to roll up with the PVC. Next go around, I will cut the cover into 3 pieces. They will be 1/3rd of the pool with 1' overlapping, maybe 6". This way...

Algae on solar cover from rain water

Here is my thought on the solar cover! Last year, I used my cover (maybe 2nd season) in where it was left on the pool for days upon days. After a few days, I would see algae forming in spots (some members disagree, but I can tell you that the cover was causing the algae). Cover on, algae showed...

Long SLAM, 17 Days & Counting

Re: Long SLAM, 17 Days & Counting I see a progress, meaning that whatever is lurking in your pool is slowly disappearing. Never use clarifiers, especially if you have a DE filter. Algaecides only work when there is no algae. Phosphate Removers are fine if you use yearly or twice a year at most...

Long SLAM, 17 Days & Counting

Re: Long SLAM, 17 Days & Counting Thank you for some more detailed information. What I was asking is a history of the last 12 days. When you tested, when you added chlorine, how much you added each day, how much you lost each day, etc.? A timeline tells a story. When you look at it in...

Long SLAM, 17 Days & Counting

Re: Long SLAM, 17 Days & Counting Cara: Can you provide a more detailed timeline over the last 12 days? Is it all possible you had ammonia in the first day or so? What does your water look like? Stop adding chlorine, wait 24 hours and determine how much you lost? Something does not add up...

Before I start SLAM today, is this mustard?

I would check the Julian date. Doubt highly this is fresh. Your basic generic bleach at WalMart is your best bet.

Does it help to add algaecide Kem/Tek 60 over the winter?

What type of cover do you have, and when exactly do you open? You may be opening your pool late. It is best to open at the end of April, and no later.

You state that you are brushing, but have you broken up the algae with the brush?

Before I start SLAM today, is this mustard?

Cara: All test results are immediate and yes, there will be color changes if you allow the water sample to sit there. Something is consuming chlorine. When you brush, is the green biofilm broken up and the water becomes cloudy? The water is safe up to SLAM levels based on CYA and there should...

Chlorine resistant algae or something else?

Jim: Welcome to the forum and please add your signature. It appears that you have circulation issues in certain "dead spots". Not once have you mentioned that you brush regularly. If you brush at least twice per week, you should be able to get rid of the problem you are faced with. It seems...

    polyquat 60

I believe that is just the concentration and strength. You may need more. Check the contents to see how many gallons the quart treats. Poly 60 treats up to 20,000 for 1 quart. You are merely looking to stall algae until the winter. So even 1 quart of Poly 60 would be sufficient.

    Use of PoolRx

If your pool guy was having trouble, clearly that is an indication he has absolutely no idea about chemistry in residential pools, etc. Most pools should be dosed with chlorine, whether manual or by an SWG daily, but a person could get away with dosing the pool twice a week if levels were kept...

Help identifying? Green stuff coming back every couple days after vacuuming

The One & Only Circulator You can look at the circulators (no guarantee, but this worked for my friend and cut his brushing time down a lot). He only has one skimmer, one main drain and 2 returns (deep and shallow), but does have 2 returns in the steps. There are 2 types (The mega and the...

Help identifying? Green stuff coming back every couple days after vacuuming

Extremely simple "Circulation" and this is why I asked if you had jets in your steps. You could keep your levels double of your minimum, but certain areas of pools lack circulation. I have 6 returns, 2 skimmers, 1 main drain, and 2 in the steps. This year, I changed out my circulators for...

Help identifying? Green stuff coming back every couple days after vacuuming

During your SLAM, use your brush to lightly brush the liner. I would use a small microfiber towel to get behind skimmer plates and light nice. Tuck in and move back and forth to remove any junk back there. You eventually may need to remove the light to clean back there, but for now, I would...

Hi Everyone...New Member Here, Same Old Problems

You could have channels in your sand. Try adding DE as Marty recommended. If this does not work, maybe there is something that is entering from the outside elements. Then try a deep sand cleaning as well. Last resort is new sand as it is usually not needed. Maybe there is some construction...

Hi Everyone...New Member Here, Same Old Problems

How do you dose your pool? Liquid? Have you used any type of powdered shock? Powdered stabilizer? Maybe the sand filter needs to have a deep cleaning. Or you can try a DE alternative to filter at a smaller level.

Hi Everyone...New Member Here, Same Old Problems

Calcium should dissolve. Are you sure it is calcium and nothing else? Calcium heats up and melts real quickly, so I do not know where you would be getting this from. I would vacuum to waste and dump out of the pool, unless you have a skimmer sock to pick everything up.

Hi Everyone...New Member Here, Same Old Problems

SunMo: Just realized you have an AGP. Once you finish the SLAM, it is important to maintain the CYA/FC relationship, but just as important brushing at least twice weekly. AGP have limited circulation and brushing alone with reduce most problems. Also, you may want to maintain a higher FC based...

Hi Everyone...New Member Here, Same Old Problems

You will need to SLAM the pool once your kit arrives as there is no way around this one. For now, add 5 ppm of bleach. If your pressure rises 25% and you have to backwash, then after backwashing add another 5 ppm. If you find that your pressure does not rise as fast, then you may want to add...

Hi Everyone...New Member Here, Same Old Problems

Are you in the process of a SLAM now because of a green pool? Not green anymore indicates you have algae. Therefore, you must SLAM the pool. Pump is running 24/7 until you finish the SLAM. Chlorine additions should be done through the day so you keep the level up to SLAM as best as possible...

Losing the Resistant Mustard Algae Battle

Do not add any clarifiers as the Sand Filter will clear up the pool naturally. At 1000 ppb, your water will only remain cloudy, at most for 24-48 hours. My water cleared up within 8 hours and the pressure increased maybe less than 1/2 psi. Not only did I not backwash, but I added Fiber Clear...

Liner fading progression after 3 years

Serious: You can see that there is very little fading above the water line. Makes me think that a dark blue with a blue backing may be the next liner in 5-7 years +, but you never know how long a liner will last. I also like the natural look. Good news is I have plenty of time before a new liner.
