    Stupid question

I went to our neighborhood pool and they post the chlorine level daily. It said 2 in the AM. This is a huge pool with a high bather load. And it looks like that is about normal for a commercial pool (1-3) according to the internet. My question is how the heck with the sun all day is that enough...

    Opening/closing help

Just opened my pool with algae on the steps. The water was clear. Test results: 0 FC 7.8 ph 0 cya 50 alk I added 3 bottles (121oz ea) of 6% bleach, 1lb stabilizer and 1 bag of dichlor. With filter and brushing it became crystal clear in 24 hours. When I closed the pool I had FC at 25 and closed...

    A little concerned...

1 gallon. It was partly sunny and the bleach is great value bleach says 8.25% sod hypo, but yields 7.86% available chlorine. I was concerned about the OCLT dropping 2.5. The sun was almost down at 1800 but it was cloudy and this am I tested before sun came up.

    A little concerned...

Ready to close. Temp has dropped. Tested yesterday at 0930 FC 6.5 CYA 40. Added 1 bottle of 8.25% bleach which should add 8 FC. I tested at 1800 and got FC 11. Clearly needed an OCLT and got FC 8.5 this AM, which is a fail. I have not had a single problem all year and the FC has not dipped below...

    Summer Vacation

Ok so on Saturday the family is headed on vacation until the following Saturday. My pool chews through about 3-3.5ppm chlorine per day from sun exposure and occasional bathers. So for 7 days I should add 21-25ppm above minimum of 4. So 30ppm total on saturday morning? My CYA is 50. Will it...

    pH yo-yo

So I have been using BBB method for several years. I'm still learning btw. And I feel as tough my pH is like a yo-yo. Friday I tested and ph was 8.0 and alk was 60. I added acid to bring to 7.0-7.2. Then I thought alk should be around 100, so I added baking soda to bring that up. I figured the...

    6 day vacation coming... recommendations?

I'm leaving Saturday for a vacation and will not be back home for 6 days. I'm just wondering how to approach this. My cya is 30-40. I used bleach to chlorinate but will not have anyone here to do so while I'm gone. I'm thinking that I should bring up to shock level for my cya just before...

Excessive FC loss? Or something sinister.

Excessive FC loss? Or something sinister.

The last few days we have had heavy bather loads and seemed like my FC would drop more than it should. So I brought up to shock level and wanted to see how much I lose in a typical day. Just seems like a lot

Excessive FC loss? Or something sinister.

This morning (715am) FC 15.5 CC 0.5 Cya 40 pH 7.5 Alk 110 This afternoon (4pm) FC 8 CC 0.5 Cya pH alk same. My pool gets sun almost the whole day. Is this normal FC loss for a day with my cya or could something nasty be in the water? I am planning on an OCLT soon (prob Tuesday). I'm am almost...

    Bad dpd powder??

My pool has been burning through some chlorine the last two days and the deep end was a touch cloudy, so I did the OCLT test last night and lost 1-1.5 FC. So I figured I should start a SLAM. I tested this afternoon FC 3.5 CC 0.5 Cya 50 Alk 110 pH 7.5 According to cya I needed to bring up to 20...

There has got to be a better way....

Could someone please help me out determining the best most accurate way to find out the cya level? I have a Taylor 2005 test kit. The cya markings go from 30-100. The way I have been doing the test seems extremely subjective. I mean the disappearing little black dot? I can't tell if I see it or...

Cya dispenser, pool math...do I have this right?

Also, when I squeeze the sock, should I wear a glove, or is it not that harmful to my hand?

Cya dispenser, pool math...do I have this right?

I'm currently filling up my pool with all new water. I did throw a single pick in my chlorinator yesterday. So I can assume cya is 6-7. I got some stabilizer and calculated with pool math that I should use approximately 2 lbs to bring cya up to 35ish. I set this up, is it right? Water level not...

    New liner, new water....no cya

Well I won't have any stabilizer until tomorrow. Could I put 1 puck in my chlorinator and feed slowly?

    New liner, new water....no cya

Currently filling my pool that was emptied for a new liner. Cya should be zero. The filling will take another day, add some bleach this evening with no cya to ward off any algae growth or just wait til tomorrow and add cya via sock. There have been no chemicals added thus far and this is day 2...

    FC and swimming

Jumped on in the pool. Everything seems fine except the slimy feeling of the water on my skin. Could it be the sunscreen, high TA? any thoughts?

    FC and swimming

I am sure that this question has been asked before but with the holiday weekend in full swing I wanted to make sure as I am entertaining guests this afternoon : What are the safe levels of FC to swim? If not a safety issue....what would be okay for swimmer comfort without bleaching a suit. Test...

    Measuring bleach...and testing

Ok I have a simple and probably a stupid question. How does everyone measure the amount of liquid bleach you are putting in the pool? If I put in 1 jug....that's easily measurable, however If I am doing an OCLT and SLAM....I need to measure after the sun goes down and figure out how much to...

    Grrr.....something chewing my FC

So i should bring up to shock level like 3 times per day until I pass the OCLT test? That's gonna burn up my dpd powder quick. But if it's what I have to do then it is what it is.

    Grrr.....something chewing my FC

I believe I did but I'm not totally sure. I have a hard time remembering what I had for breakfast today. :) You think maybe I hadn't gotten all the algae out and it bloomed over vacation? The pool is crystal clear...not that it's any indicator

    Grrr.....something chewing my FC

side note - just added 121oz of 8.25% bleach that should bring FC up to 22

    Grrr.....something chewing my FC

Ok. I opened my pool to a lovely green algae habitat. I brushed, vacuumed, and SLAMMED my way to a beautiful clear pool. I went on vacation for 8 days, brought up to shock level, added 5x3" tabs to chlorinator and came back to a clear pool but FC was around 3. My CYA is 50-55. I brought the FC...

    Quick question....

Ok I was not counting the last drop, results are unchanged 21 drops last night, 18 drops this morning. 10.5 to 9.0 FC The water looks spectacular, crystal clear. There are always several (30-40) insects (spiders, rolly polly, worms and earwigs) in the bottom of the pool every day. I vacuum them...

    Quick question....

OCLT results are in I ran an OCLT test last night and I lost 1.5 ppm of FC. So does this definitely mean that I have something in my water? It went from 10 to 8.5 Also when the solution goes from light pink to clear, do you count the last drop?
