Should i avoid an L shaped pool?

I had an L shaped pool for my first inground pool and it was the best design we ever had! It was 42' long. The deep end was the top of the L and was 18' across x 17' long. The shallow end was 25' long x 30' across. We had basketball hoops on either side of the shallow end and had a dozen...

    New Pool!

100% agree. If they haven't shot gunite yet, I would change it 4' - 5'. That's what we have and and it's fantastic. If I had a larger pool, I would have went 4' - 8'. Both of my earlier pools had deep ends and my kids were fish within 4-6 weeks, and then loved the deeper depth for many many...

    Pool design

Just curious - do the steps into the pool have to be so wide? I know that the height of each step is mandated by code, but what about the width? My pool is fairly small, and the steps use up a good deal of space - if I had to do it over again, and I could make the steps narrower in width, I...

Pool Rail choice, Marine grade for pool with a SWG?

That's the rail I have! It looks great in a pool. My last pool, I used the standard rail, and it started showing rust in about 3 years. This time I went with marine grade. Still looks brand new after 3+ years, so I would recommend you go with marine grade.

OB Fiberglass Pool in South Florida

Am I missing something here? Shouldn't the pipes and conduit already be run under the slab? I assumed you already had pipes and conduit run, and then compacted over the top of everything. I've never done this, but as an engineer, I'm very interested. Are you now trenching through the compacted...

OB Fiberglass Pool in South Florida

This is one case where I would recommend using a floater with chlorine tabs. It will slowly add CYA and chlorine to the pool.

Awesome write up! I'm having a blast reading through the steps, and you have injected just the right amount of humor! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Streaking and mottling in a new pebble tec install

They did a low pH treatment on mine that required no draining of the pool. They dumped a ton of muriatic acid in and let it sit for a day or so, then brought the pH back up. Kind of like a more even, gentler, acid wash. It worked great for my pool.

Streaking and mottling in a new pebble tec install

This would be an issue for me. I have WetEdge, but it's basically the same product. I experienced several blotches and discolorations, but nothing as prominent as this. My PB did a low pH treatment, and made the bad areas nearly invisible. Nobody else notices them now - I know where they were...

    Pool installed WRONG WAY ROUND

If you're saying it's 180 degrees flipped, then I actually like the direction it is currently being installed in. It makes sense to me based on your back yard. Switching it around will put the shallow end close to the fence. Leaving it this way will give you more room to build out a patio on the...

HELP Me Decide Vinyl vs Gunite!

One more plus to pavers... if you ever get a leak in your plumbing and need to dig to repair it, you can easily lift up the pavers, dig, repair, repack the substrate, and replace the pavers. No one will ever know you had to repair something underground. With concrete, you would need to cut out...

HELP Me Decide Vinyl vs Gunite!

I have had both. My 1st 3 pools were vinyl - started with an above ground vinyl for a couple of years, then put in a 42K gallon in-ground vinyl pool in Michigan. Move to GA and put in a 20K gallon in-ground vinyl pool, then finally to FL where we installed a gunite pool a little over 2 years...

Every single section of new coping cracked within 3 months

For the bristles, run to Lowes, HD, or Harbor Freight and get a magnetic pickup brush. It will easily pick all of that up so it doesn't go any farther with regards to staining. Cleaners won't pick it up - too small and heavy for the suction to grab everything. A good solution for the cracks...

    Pool Safety Act- Smartlocks?

The 5' height for locks is so that small children can't physically reach the latches or doorknobs to open the door or gate. This a specific code that is enforced in every state that I know of. Using a smart lock won't work, as a small child will still be able to reach the lock and (so the...

Builder accidentally put tile on top of spillway

I love the look of that tile on the top of the spillway. I agree with kimkats, was the granite supposed to alter the fall of the water? If not, I prefer the look of the tile.

Under contract now! - New build/quotes in central Florida - Opinions welcome!

I would take some time and research and do the math for solar heating. Solar works great when you don't need it (in the middle of summer), helps a little in spring and fall, and not much at all when you really need it. Since you're already spending the $$ on a heat pump, spending another $5K or...

Under contract now! - New build/quotes in central Florida - Opinions welcome!

One more thing - I would highly recommend that you don't go 3' on the shallow end. That is way too shallow. Mine goes from 4' - 5' and we love it. Even 3.5' is too shallow. I hear a lot of folks say "I need 3' for the kids", but then they find out that they only need the 3' for a couple of...

Under contract now! - New build/quotes in central Florida - Opinions welcome!

Good catch - I mossed that (my spa is separate from my pool). As long as you: Have a separate feed to heat the pool vs the spa (a heat pump can service two bodies of water - you just need separate pumps for each) Maintain the temp in the spa ...you'll have no issues. When you really need gas...

Under contract now! - New build/quotes in central Florida - Opinions welcome!

Two things I see right off the bat - I would want a larger filter than a C200. I don't see the size of the Jandy filter, but for filters, the bigger the better. For the heater, one PB is quoting a 100K heater, and the other 110K. Heat pumps work fantastically well in central Fl! That being...

Under contract now! - New build/quotes in central Florida - Opinions welcome!

I'm in central FL as well and just went through this process a little over 2 years ago! I had 6 builders out, and the eventual PB we went with was incredible. Best price, reasonable install time (10.3 weeks from dig to water), and have been very responsive on minor follow up issues! If Premier...

    Permit?

My pool is also gated with lock on both sides, and my back yard is surrounded by a 6' block wall. I still needed alarms on all potential entry points to the pool. This included 2 sliding doors and four windows along the back of the home that faced the pool.

    Disappointed in my new pool

That doesn't look crowded to me at all! I love the look! I would look at adding shade over the patio area by the pool. There are several options here - umbrellas, shade sails, or if you're adding a birdcage over the area you can add a canvas top over a portion of the cage for shade. I have 2/3...

StoneScapes Mini Pebble, Puerto Rico Blend Small and Touch of Glass

We went with Wet Edge Laguna Blue. This was an upgrade that included bright blue glass beads. Once my wife saw the sample there was no going back. Was it worth the upgrade cost? Definitely. When in full sun, and at night with the lights on, the beads sparkle and gleam giving the finish a rich...

    Draw Schedule- Would you pay?

My concern here would be that if you don't pay, you may get moved back in the queue for ongoing work. They most likely have a number of builds in process, and those that pay per their schedule will get priority (9 times out of 10). I would really like to see a PB with a draw that actually leaves...

Pool resurfacing- white plaster vs Signature Matrix Wet Edge

I have Wet Edge, and I love it... BUT... it is hard on your feet if you're in for extended periods of time and active. We wear water shoes while in the pool if we're moving around a lot. When lounging in pool and drinking... not so much :) They do offer a polished version of Wet Edge - more...

    Dog Door for Inspection???

Yes, if the edge of the pool is closer than a specific distance (I think it's either 5' or 6'), then the window has to have safety glass in it in case someone falls into it. Think of a car windshield - it breaks, but glass doesn't scatter everywhere, it remains mainly intact.

    Dog Door for Inspection???

Wow. I'm in Florida, and we have always had a cat door to the back screened in area where the pool was installed. This door is pretty big - 8" wide x 12" tall - as we have 2 Maine Coons. This was never brought up as an issue by the builder, and the inspector never even looked at it. If it were...

Finally Finished! - New Build in Tampa, FL

From a safety perspective, the underground is safer for you long term. I would never have a gas pipe run through my attic. If a leak develops, by the time you know it will be too late. I live in The Villages and many of the initial homes were built this way. After a few explosions where the home...
