    Spa issue due to freezing

So I have a "chicken or egg" scenario here. Went out of town for a few weeks and knew I would be changing the water when I returned so I didn't mind missing weekly checks. Done it before, no issues. When I went to drain my spa it was empty. Checked breakers and one of two were tripped. There...

Dirt in cover channel jammed under rope. SOLVED

I had a leak, documented in another thread, and now some of the dirt from the concrete repair has found itself in the cover track and jammed the rope up. I took precautions and duct taped over the track but the guys must have swept or washed some dirt in. I've tried pressure washer and...

Need help with a leak and plumbing SOLVED

I need some help on fixing a leak. One of my return fittings is leaking from the threads and needs to be replaced. The issue I have is normally I would just bring the three pipes vertical and install a manifold from the top. I live at 1 mile and have snow and freezing. If I come up, I will...

Need help/opinion of skimmer leak fiberglass pool

Pool is 20 years old, never had an issue with the skimmer. Since summarizing (water was left below skimmer) the pool was dropping about an inch a day leveling off at the bottom of the tiles, 1/2” above skimmer bottom. There are no visible cracks inside the skimmer or the tunnel. I also checked...

    Squirrels ruining pool cover

Just installed a brand new in ground cover. Little ******** chewed a 10" long hole along the crease. Besides shooting them is there a repellant that anyone can recommend to apply to the cover? It's right where the cover drops to the water closest to the underground reel so it never really...

High alkalinity & normal ph relationship in a covered pool

I’ve had an issue with high alkalinity. I’ve had a few posts about it. A little history, I keep my pool covered all the time. A few years ago, I found my alkalinity at about 180 and ph 7.5. I asked how to lower alkalinity only and found that it’s tied to ph and I can lower it with Muriatic acid...

    Opened up today, looks nice!

Second year with a tarp over my electric cover. FC 4 at open. Now to get the 54 degrees up. Next year I'm going to try with the cover rolled up and only the tarp instead of under the tarp for support. See if it's still as nice and save my cover some life.

    Time for new cover.

Just a rant. Started opening today and my cover just gave out, tearing at the seams. I shouldn't be too upset as this one lasted six years. Usually they only last three years. This is because I installed a non rectangular pool and the automatic cover runs over the concrete and just wears...

M400 Issue and Maytronics great response.

I wanted to pass along my experience dealing with Maytronics. I bought a M400 from Marina in Denver last June. They were great other than getting through to them. This weekend my M400 would not turn on. When I plugged it in the power supply lights would flash on for a second then turn off...

    Pump Timer question intelliflo

I'm considering upgrading my 9 year old Whisperflo 1.5 hp (011514) with an Intellifo VSF (011056). The reason is, as per Pentair it will be an exact match for plumbing since I have no more room to cut pvc. My question is mostly about power. I'm currently on a 20 amp 240 breaker but it's...

    Mastertemp 400 rattle

I have a slight rattle coming from inside the heater. I assume it's the bypass manifold. I will be opening it up to check or change. I plan on changing the thermal regulator at the same time. I already have a new set of o-rings along with most sensors I keep as spares. Since I'm opening it...

Cheap cover on top of cover worked great!.

Just a quick background. Usually I close my cover, stick a pump on it for winter. when I open I have to slam, clean all the Crud that blew in under the cover, pressure wash the cover and clean out the cover box. This last winter I decided to buy a cheap $50 tarp and water bladders to go...

New pool light and Color LED install

Just wanted to write this up for anyone doing a light replacement on their own. I had a SAm Light (Spectrum Amerlite) installed when I built the pool 17 years ago. Last year the light stopped rotating color and was stuck on an awful shade of green. I don’t use the light very much so I just...

    SWG not producing

Opened my pool a couple weeks ago and all looks good but my SWG seems to not be producing much if any. I replaced the cell at the beginning of last season, May 2018. My first thought is it was bad even though all lights indicate it's working. I've been adding a gallon of LQ 10% every few days...

    Making your own bleach/liquid chlorine?

I have a general question about the difference between sodium hypochlorite vs calcium hypochlorite. Bleach is sodium hypochlorite and I was reading I can make my own bleach using a formula of 2 tablespoons of calcium hypochlorite (shock 70%) and 3 cups of water to make the concentrate. The add...

    Soda Ash Storage

So I bought a 50lb bag of soda ash, not that I need that much, it was pretty cheap. Transferred into 5 lb jugs. How should it be stored? Does heat effect it like chlorine? Does other chemicals like acid (muriatic, cyanuric) have issues nearby?

    General question about winterizing

I've been winterizing my own pool for about 13 years after helping my pool builder with it the first few years. Never had any issues. We get temps here during the winter in the single digits. Anyway I lower the pool level to about 3" below the skimmer and blow & plug the lines. I read about...

Question on test for bromine with chlorine test

I'm using the TF-100 kit and went to check the bromine in my spa. Started with the K-1000 kit in the TF-100 and it showed 0 to .5 FC. Then I tried the R-0870/R-0871 and it came up with 6.5 FC and 0 CC. So which test works with bromine?

    Pentair filter fiberglass splinters

So today I started summerizing my pool. I put together my CCP420 and now my arms feel like I have splinters in them from the filter top. I was using a mallet to tap the clamp all around dragging my arm across the top. The filter is about 9 years old. Could it be coming apart? Looks ok to...

    New heater warranty necessary?

So my Minimax went out after 16 years and I wanted to replace with a Raypak or Pentair. My gut feeling was to go with Raypak. There are only 2 authorized repair places in my town and I will not deal with one of them. So I called the other and explained I wanted to get one installed and asked...

    Trouble with alklinity

Getting frustrated. Background 20,000 gallon salt water fiberglass pool covered. I've got it pretty good, ph 7.5, hardness 300, cyn 35 BUT Alkalinity 150. So I tried to lower alkalinity by adding muriatic acid. Then upping the ph. I was using sodium carbonate but was told by local store it...
