    Safe to run old heater?

Thanks to everyone for the help! Got her up and running today and she was heating the pool around 1.5 degrees per hour. :) I cleaned out the burner orifices with a paperclip, but when I turned the heater on there was no flame at first. I assumed I was out of luck. But then I remembered I was...

    Safe to run old heater?

I vacuumed as best I could, though it's difficult to get stuff from the back. Took a closer look with a flashlight. Still not seeing an obvious nest, though I could be missing it. I did notice more of that white fuzzy stuff scattered throughout. Is there any risk to giving the heater a try...

    Safe to run old heater?

Thanks! How does this look? I don't see any nests, though a ton of acorns got in there.

    Safe to run old heater?

I have a very old gas heater that I inherited with the house. The only thing I can read on it is "Laars 2" which, based on googling, appears to be a Jandy heater from 15-20 years ago. I know the heater was tested last year by the pool company the previous owner used. So it still worked as of...

    Bubbles in check valve

With TFP's help, I was able to open my pool this season by myself! Feeling mighty proud. :) Thanks to all who contribute here. Now I'm onto fixing a suction side air leak problem. I have three lines that go to my pump: the main drain, shallow skimmer, and deep skimmer. All three of these...

    Solar cover only (no heater)?

Thankfully I don't really lose any days here in the summer. It's pretty consistently hot and humid all summer. I totally get what you and Newdude are saying about it not helping when the temperature is consistently lower. But temperatures in the spring obviously vary quite a bit... a quick...

    Solar cover only (no heater)?

Dude this is amazing, thank you so much! I'm a math nerd so you're speaking my love language. Your assumptions actually look very accurate. The only question I have about the model is with the the multiple day convergence thing... how many previous days of data do you need for a good...

    Solar cover only (no heater)?

Hmm, I've seen so many positive things about solar covers here that I assumed it could make a difference. I know there are lots of factors, but could I get an extra 2-3 weeks of swimmable water in the spring? If not, seems like the hassle wouldn't be worth it. I'd be curious to hear from...

    Solar cover only (no heater)?

I'm planning to renovate my pool soon and need to come up with a heating plan! As part of the renovation, I'm hoping to move the equipment pad down closer to the pool. But space is at a premium and I'd rather not have a big honking heater there if it's not necessary. My current heater is also...

How do I install my new pump?

Thanks! I'm planning to run it 24/7. Just want to be sure it doesn't need some special wiring or something that I don't have before I get started. I don't understand electrical stuff at all 😕😅

How do I install my new pump?

@1poolman1 @Newdude Thank you sirs! This is probably a dumb question, but I received the pump today and there's a sticker on it that says "this pump must be installed with a two, multi, or variable speed pump motor control". Am I misunderstanding something, or don't these pumps have a...

How do I install my new pump?

This one, maybe? Link Edit: Hmm, any concern with it being listed as NPT instead of MIP? There's also this Hayward one.

How do I install my new pump?

Phew, thanks! I'll try to remove the epoxy by tapping and sanding. The equipment pad is indeed high above the pool, maybe like 6 ft or so. That said, I've never been able to get the pump to prime by itself, so I don't know if the check valves are helping enough anyway. Not sure if the problem...

How do I install my new pump?

Sweet, thanks! Is it safe to use acetone or alcohol to help remove the epoxy and clean up the check valve? So If I'm understanding the plan, I would be going like this: check valve --> 2" coupler --> 2" PVC --> union --> pump. I'm a little concerned about running out of space as there's a...

How do I install my new pump?

My pump kicked the can last week, so I have a new Calimar pump on the way (1.5 HP since the 3 HP is out of stock). However, I'm new to this whole pool ownership game, and it seems the previous stewards of the equipment pad didn't leave me with a lot to work with. See attached photos! You can see...

Is this normal? Dolphin Active 20 leaving debris

I tried taping the flap down with electrical tape today. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe a small improvement, but nothing major. I still think there's an issue with the suction. I just watched it go right over a medium sized leaf and not grab it. The suction isn't totally broken, though. It...

Is this normal? Dolphin Active 20 leaving debris

Only the tiniest bit. It's definitely not clogged. One more observation: when the robot changes direction, sometimes it kind of hops off the floor for a moment on one side. I just assumed that's normal because it weighs more on the other side, but figured I'd mention in case it's a sign that...

Is this normal? Dolphin Active 20 leaving debris

Tried this today. I didn't notice a huge difference in performance, maybe a little better. And lost a bunch of debris when I took the robot out of the water, like you mentioned. :( I watched the robot for a while and did notice it blows some of the debris around when approaching.

Pump died, need help! New pool owner

Bumping for additional help! Not sure if I need a certain size pump to go with my situation mentioned above. I'd greatly appreciate any advice. Some additional info, if relevant: on the suction side, I have a main drain, shallow skimmer, and deep skimmer. On the return side, I have one main...

Pump died, need help! New pool owner

Sweet, thanks. So I can order any pump, then? It would be nice to save some money with the Calimar, for example. Any thoughts on my equipment pad being quite a bit higher than pool level with a long run? And the 1.5" plumbing? Do either of those things affect whether I should get, say, a 1.5...

Pump died, need help! New pool owner

Well, I can turn the power off a few different ways. I have a breaker box in my garage for the entire property. In there, POOL PUMP is listed as numbers 14 and 16. See attached photo. Is this a double pole breaker? (In case it matters, I believe that breaker also shuts off the power to the...
