Welp, I think my pump died today. RIP. It started making a high pitch noise last night, so I turned it off. When I tried to prime it today, it started making a terrible and loud screeching noise. I'm not really interested in trying to fix it since it's 10 years old and single-speed, so seems like it's time for a replacement.

Three main issues I could use help with:

1) Electricity: I'm a total newb in this area. How do I figure out what voltage I have? I think I remember the pool guy saying I only have 115V, but I'm not sure. My current pump works on either 115 or 230, so that info doesn't help. Attached are some photos of the wiring, in case you can tell based on that.

2) What pump to buy? Perhaps an important factor is that the equipment pad is far away from the pool -- maybe like 65 feet away -- and also elevated several feet above pool level. Priming is difficult. I've never been able to prime it without significant manual intervention (water in basket, closing all but one suction line to start, hose in skimmer, etc), so the pump has been running 24/7. Not sure to what extent the priming issues are because of the pump itself or the lid versus an air leak somewhere else versus it just being difficult because of the long run from the pool. Some additional info about matching the pump to my equipment: I recently purchased a CCP 320 cartridge filter, but I haven't installed it yet. And my plumbing, at least at the equipment pad, is 1.5". Not sure about the suction and returns, but I've been told it's probably flex pvc because of the age of the pool (built 1987) and the builder (Sylvan).

3) Plumbing: You'll see in the photos that whoever did the pump previously patched it together with puddy or something. There are no unions and not much pipe remaining to work with, as far as I can tell. Where do I even cut to start working on installing the new pump?

Where do you turn the power for the pump off? It will either be a double pole (220v) or single pole (120v) breaker.

Well, I can turn the power off a few different ways. I have a breaker box in my garage for the entire property. In there, POOL PUMP is listed as numbers 14 and 16. See attached photo. Is this a double pole breaker?

(In case it matters, I believe that breaker also shuts off the power to the booster pump.)

Then at the equipment pad, I can turn off the pump two more ways: at the intermatic box, and underneath there's a switch against the wall. Circled in the attached photo.

Sweet, thanks. So I can order any pump, then? It would be nice to save some money with the Calimar, for example.

Any thoughts on my equipment pad being quite a bit higher than pool level with a long run? And the 1.5" plumbing? Do either of those things affect whether I should get, say, a 1.5 HP or 3.0 HP pump? In the Calimar manual, it says not to install it more than 10' above pool level (this is also what the Pentair manual says). I think I'm at roughly 6' above pool level.

Bumping for additional help! Not sure if I need a certain size pump to go with my situation mentioned above. I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Some additional info, if relevant: on the suction side, I have a main drain, shallow skimmer, and deep skimmer. On the return side, I have one main pool return that splits into two 1" pipes at the pool. Then I have another small return that was previously used for a pressure side Polaris. And then I have a return line going to my integrated spa which splits somewhere into 4 pipes at the spa (1.5" pipes, I think), and the spa spills over into the pool.

(The drain line from the spa is broken, which is a whole 'nother problem...)

I would go with the 3hp vsp.
If you go with the Calimar (or other similar) I recommend that you get the $99 3yr extended warranty (may differ for other brands/retailers) as well,
as their longevity isn’t fully known yet. Even adding the warranty its a substantial cost savings over other pumps.
