    Major Refurb - two questions

Greetings all... I am in the midst of refinishing my pool hopper and bottom... the concrete work is nearly done, now I have two questions as I start thinking about completing the job... 1) The Light As you can see, I currently have a piece of white plastic over the light niche. I've had...

one small urgent problem - many long term problems... how do I plug this?

immediate issue... my pool deck had a return line coming up out... I assume it was for a slide. The prior owner had put a piece of iron pipe with a cap down into the hole... it rusted away and now is leaking. I thought I would find a PVC line down in the concrete once I got the old piece out...

    PoolPartz.com - great experience & low cost

Greetings all - it's been a while since I last posted. In the spring, I jumped onto the robot cleaner bandwagon. Through all of my research, I ended up buying a refurbed unit from poolpartz.com (Dolphin pool cleaners) During the overly thorough research phase, I naturally asked for feedback...

Family vacation recommendation - Grand Canyon or Yellowstone?

To close this one off... we got back from Arizona last Saturday. We spent time at the Grand Canyon and in Sedona... liked Sedona better - just more to do around the area. All-in-all it was a fun experience!

Why CYA in covered hot tub?

ah ha... maybe it's just because I'm a big dork, but that explanation made a lot more sense to me! Thanks Matt! I understand the need to add liquid each time, and will continue to do so. My previous calculations said 1/3 cup per person per 30 minutes of tub time. The reason for the saltron...

Why CYA in covered hot tub?

I follow what you guys are saying, but by adding CYA, I will need to increase FC in order to have the same effective sanitization. So I still don't understand the need to have CYA in a covered tub...

Why CYA in covered hot tub?

Switching my hot tub over to saltwater. Bought a Saltron mini on eBay. As I think about the swap over, I started to wonder about the need for stabilizer. The hot tub is covered at all times - except when I’m in it. So the exposure to sunlight is 30 minutes per day max. Generally it is used in...

Family vacation recommendation - Grand Canyon or Yellowstone?

Just booked flights to Phoenix... Grand Canyon it is!! Now - to find lodging (probably a cabin near Flagstaff), car rental (would like to rent a 4-door Jeep), and activities for the family. Thinking about doing a guided tour type thing for a day into the canyon. Any other recommendations?

Of course! What better way to convert volume to mass... the weight of gas! (I really wish there was a universally accepted sarcasm font) I guess those numbers came from pool math... didn’t even consider trying that. Thanks Matt

My SWG says it’s output is 1.45# of chlorine per 24 hours. If my memory serves me right, I was adding 1 jug (121 oz) of 8.25% bleach every-other day last summer. So... how does that convert? How do you convert fluid oz of chlorine to pounds of chlorine? I just set the timer on the SWG to...

Today's tests... FC = 4.5 CH = 175 TA = 60 pH = 7.5 time to add the boric acid I do believe. I'm trying to get my chemistry right then I'll start the SWG. Might dump one of my leftover jugs of bleach in while waiting to ensure the FC doesn't drop too far. I need to check CYA again to...

SafeStep 7300 - safe form of calcium?

I did a bit of research on it when I initially got it. I think that the 7300 refers to 73% calcium chloride. They also sell an 8300... which is more pure (83%). I seem to remember one more after that. Anyway, the local hardware has a 25# tub for $32. Guess I’ll pick one up

SafeStep 7300 - safe form of calcium?

Same thing I was thinking. I used it in the hot tub because the water is going to get swapped out every so often anyway... and 250 gallons is a lot less risk than 30k gallons! Haven’t seen any negative side effects. But I’ll buy the real stuff for the pool.

SafeStep 7300 - safe form of calcium?

Down south, we don’t have de-icer as a regular commodity, so I had a visitor from the great white north stop by Lowe’s and bring me a bag of it during a recent visit. The product I received was SafeStep 7300. The MSDS bothers me... it says that the composition is 60-100% Calcium Chloride...

Did pulled pork this weekend. Here’s the method I’ve perfected over the past 10 years... When I smoke pork shoulders, I fill the smoker (22” Weber Smokey Mountain). 4 boneless butts from Costco - 36# uncooked. Ended up with ~19# cooked. We put it into quart size freezer bags - 2# per bag...

Better to run the SWG at high % and short time or low % and longer time? It seems that the cost of running my pump is going to be negligible, so I can do either.
