    High chlorine but algae?

Hate to pester, but can I just shut off the chlorinator? I don't think I can remove them safely. Also, why would there be algae with high chlorine? I don't understand that at all.

    High chlorine but algae?

should I shock it, or just let the algae go for now? What could be the issue that a OCLT would show?

    High chlorine but algae?

I've had a trouble free pool for years now, thanks to this website. This is the first time in a long time I've had to ask a question because I'm having a problem I can't figure out how to rectify. My pool has high chlorine (10), but is starting to grow algae. The other numbers are below...

What else do I need besides shock to close pool?

I'm not sure of water temperature, but we usually close it by this time every year since we don't have a heater so no one uses it. I suppose we can wait a little longer. All other tests with the test kit are within range. I keep chlorine level at a normal level. I use liquid bleach every...

What else do I need besides shock to close pool?

I have a 33,000 gallon in ground pool that we are closing on our own and I don't know what we need to do besides shock the pool the day before. What other chemicals do I add? I need something I can pick up locally, not order online as we are closing soon. Thank you

    CYA reading

Thank you. Yes, I knew not to trust those numbers but just couldn't seem to figure out the dot! Anyway, your help is appreciated and I'm more confident I will be able to read the level myself and adjust accordingly. TFP has been a huge help keeping our pool swimmable for a few years now...

    CYA reading

I am still not confident about reading the cya level when testing with the kit. I had it tested at a local pool store and it tested at 21. They recommended I add 5 pounds of stabilizer. I have been adding it in about 2 pound increments to make sure I don't overdo it. Question 1: What...

Low cya should I switch to tablets?

I have been very successful for a few years following this websites advice …thanks !! We originally found this site because our cya was very high and I haven’t used tablets in years and only use liquid chlorine now. My cya is now very low and I’m wondering if it’s smart to switch back to...

    Total Alkalinity ideal range.

Thank you so much for the help....I will aerate and re check soon. In the meantime, the app says I can add something to adjust pH...is that ok to do, or should I try aeration first for some reason ?

    Total Alkalinity ideal range.

Thank you for the info. How do I "aerate"? I didn't know that about the tablets, and we usually use just liquid chlorine, but had some tablets to use up and since our CYA was on the low side I felt comfortable doing so. We had switched to just liquid a few years ago, on the advice of...

    Total Alkalinity ideal range.

I have your Pool Math App that I use every day. I also have the test kit. In the test kit, the card says that ideal TA for chlorine pool is 100-120. But in the app it says ideal is 60-80. Which one is correct? My TA is 70, my pH is about 7.0. After I get the answer about ideal TA...

    Chlorine and PVC piping

These pipes are underground. So no sun on them. But if we have to replace them, I'll see if they can use rigid pipe. Thank you

    Chlorine and PVC piping

Thanks....I was thinking it wouldn't be bad since I'm assuming most people have PVC pipes correct?

    Chlorine and PVC piping

I'm not sure where to post this, and didn't want the question to get lost on my other post, so figured I would try here. We have a portion of flexible PVC pipe going to our filter. When we had a leak last year, my husband said the flexible portions seemed to be pitted on the inside and he was...

Why is water cloudy if chemicals are almost perfect ?

yes. But it only took one day and it the test numbers were in range. Maybe I didn't do it right?

Why is water cloudy if chemicals are almost perfect ?

What percentage of bleach to use and other questions

Thanks. We haven't used any tablets. Only liquid chlorine. The acidity is probably coming from our pine trees that drop needles and wound up in our pool over the winter. Can't for the life of me find liquid chlorine anywhere but Sam's or a grocery store. All of the pool stores only carry...

What percentage of bleach to use and other questions

It's been hard to find liquid bleach in my area, but we found some from Sam's club that says it is 7.55% chlorine. Is this the number I put into the app or do I have to calculate some other percentage? Also, has anyone purchased Target's Up and Up brand of chlorine ? The price is...

Opening up pool with mesh cover

This is only the second season we have had a mesh cover. In previous years we had a cover that was not mesh and when we opened the pool it was crystal clear. Our water is dark and murky. It doesn't look like algae. We have a lot of pine trees around our pool and so that doesn't help...

    Maintaining chlorine level

Hello....I was hoping to not need to bother anyone this season but alas, I have a question. We opened our pool a week ago, and this was the first season we opened it after using a mesh cover. The water was a deep green, whereas we always opened our pool and saw clear water. But because I...

Steps to lower PH and where to buy higher strength chlorine

I searched the forum but had trouble locating anything that says how to lower pH.....I mean the actual steps. CAn I just add the powder to the skimmer, or dilute it and add it directly to the pool? Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can look for higher strength...

Brought up CYA but still not holding Chlorine

Thank you to everyone that responded! You were all so helpful. I will perform the OCLT and see how it goes. I see that it may not be off base to be using this much chlorine, but I guess it can't hurt to check. If that checks out fine, I could probably increase the CYA slightly easily...
