A Cheap Pool Cooler for the end of Summer

dave, thanks for your post. i had been relying on my spa overflow to cool my pool... with absolutely zero success. after thinking about your post, i fired up my two little deck jets that don't look too great, especially without working to get them balanced (which my automation isn't...

Unusual Chlorine Demand -- Peeing in the Pool

I wasn't sure if I was going to build a fence on the last remaining side of my yard... but now I know I've got to! Way too much fun to be had relieving myself (and my guests) to be passed up just because of some little privacy issue (and other threats.) Calling the fence guy tomorrow. I've...

A Cheap Pool Cooler for the end of Summer

very interesting... I've got a wide spillover, and my temps are still running 94 or so by end of day... dropping to 91 overnight. I'm guessing that circulating water through 95 deg air doesn't cool it very much (if any).... might even be heating it? What are the air temps running in your area...

Plants for landscaping around the pool

Thanks for the thread. I've been wanting to more research on plants. I think I'll even start a thread a little more specific to my goals, and will be watching this one closely. Pin oak, huh? A friend of mine suggested a Drake Elm. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

    SteveNbr's pool build

Just an updated pic. Construction still dragging on. I think my pb wants to see how long he can take to stretch out a week's worth of work. They did the mastic today. Got the pool verrry dirty, but they did a nice job. They covered the mastic with a gray sand so that it looks like mortar...

    waterbear's pool pics

Waterbear, How well does your Icebreaker cool your pool? Is that basically like running an air conditioner in theory and money? My heater is yet to be installed, and my pool is reallly warm, so I might would consider something different. Well, water is running through my heater, but not gas...

Thanks Mary, Yea, I don't really plan to cover it for any extended period of time... maybe just when we know a nice storm is coming...or a super windy Fall day....Fall? in LA?.... oh yea, that day before winter. or maybe when my neighbor decides to mow 1 hour before my pool party... (like...

    Skimmer Socks vs. Knee Highs

I wasted $6 at my local pool store on some sox that are too small for my skimmer. If you bother to spend the $, make sure you get some large enough for your skimmer. I plan to try again soon.

Thanks for the tip... I just got finished with my inground pool build, and plan to keep it "open" year round (but then again, who knows?).... but I've considered covering it with something during our Louisiana Fall, (which is typically about the Thanksgiving week), but have no idea what to...

Outdoor Fans - Needs to move air

my lil advice to anyone installing ceiling fans outdoors... Make sure you install them as low as reasonably possible. the last 2 houses i've had, my fans have been too high, and sometimes you can barely feel any air moving ... good luck.... steve

Thanks for all the kind words. pb had his plumber fix the leak in the spa that I identified for him today... appeared he just stuffed the "gap" between the fitting and plaster with "putty?".... anyways, for now appears to holding like a champ. couldn't see any signs of leakage. we may have...

When & how long to auto-vac?

I doubt I'm as vigilant as Mbar, and guessing my pool won't be as perfectly maintained as his either. Thinking that my lil bot will end up in the pool a few times a week also. Thanks for the feedback, now I kinda know that it's a manual thing... not an automated thing... They're supposed to...

Thanks for the encouragement. Pb called today telling me that they had found the leak in the spa. Got home to find that indeed... they didn't. But after another examination, I found it. (or at least a big one.) Using food coloring, I could get it to suck the dye heavily right under one of...

Sean, First (and foremost), is that a cliche'? Well, anyway, firstmost, thanks for setting up this board. You're doing a great a job of making a place for people around the country, (and even the world) communicate about their pool hobby. Of course communication leads to other good things...

    Lesson Learned....

yep... my wife mentioned that she had meant to try adding a drop of bleach to the test to see the reaction... but it had slipped somehow.... must've slipped between doing the laundry, cooking dinner, work... or one of those cracks... my naive self never doubted the test.

    Lesson Learned....

Lesson: If you keep adding chemical, and your test continues to show no change, at some point you need to doubt your test. New pool. New test kit. Not using salt yet. Add calculated volume of bleach. A little change, up to .5 ppm. Continuing to add cya, meanwhile adding more bleach. And...
