no winter cover in metro detroit?

Thanks Leebo. We're strongly considering leaving the cover off and using the leaf net. Most leaves are down but we have a couple stubborn trees that hang on to their leaves into December. Like Now. Still with leaves.

no winter cover in metro detroit?

Our winter cover just tore and is unsalvagable. Has anyone in metro detroit left their AGP uncovered all winter, with trees and a lot of leaves still ready to drop? What would you recommend? The water is already green and it's cold! Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Is the stuff in the bag the same as what's on the bottom of the pool? Good question. It looks like you meant WAS and yes we would expect it to be getting worse if the filter is not running and you are not adding chlorine. Is the water tinted at all. Sometimes it looks...

Very interesting. Thanks for the thorough explanation. Glad it has nothing to do with algae or high calcium levels.

It's great that you're encouraging the OP but what is this all about? Never heard this. What do you think @mknauss, @zea3, @JoyfulNoise?

I can't remember: did you try putting a sock over the return opening to see if anything from the filter blows into the pool thru the return and gets caught in the sock? Everything you describe about this stuff points to algae.
  8. mariane

Can't get rid of dead algae.

You can put a sock over the return and see if it collects anything.

Look at Pool Math page. At the bottom it calculates the gallons for you when you put in size of pool and water depth. https://www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html Here's an example:

    Algae Help!

I think most of us were sceptics when we started because we had been "pool stored" so badly. We were desperate to find something, anything that worked besides the terrible advice from the pool store that was not working. My last straw was when the pool store employee (who did not have a pool...

I can't remember have you ever in past years used floc or clarifier? That can gum up the sand and decrease the effectiveness of the filter.

A slightly dirty filter actually cleans better than a clean one. That's essentially what you're doing when you add the DE. So don't backwash until the psi increases 25 percent above the clean pressure. Have you ever deep cleaned your sand? There is a video on how to do it in this forum. It...

Thanks for your reply. I know the detective work is hard. And you have checked all kinds of things. Many times algae is in the sand that weighs down the ladder/stairs but you checked it and nothing there. With all this said, Question - no lights or other equipment in the pool? The auto vacuum -...

OP has an above ground pool. Usually vinyl and usually only 1 return. Plugging it would cause a big problem.

Great news! So many of us have been in your shoes and have gotten "egakated" (LOL) with TFP methods. We would never go back. As my siggy says: No longer pool stored 10 summers and counting. I would be curious what the pH reads after the storm.

Please put in your signature the make and model of your pool. Is it hardsided? A doughboy? A Bestway? An Esther Williams? Is it softsided? An Intex? A Coleman? You get the idea. You're right. You cannot block a return jet. How many return jets do you have? If you put a sock over the return jet...

Yea, probably. :swim: It's like when we first learn something new and we want to do it just right, afraid to mess things up. It won't make that much difference, being off by 1 or 2 drops when testing for FC. You'll get this and experience how easy it can be. I don't want to beat a dead horse...

    Algae Help!

TFP has helped thousands maybe millions. And those who chose not to follow the advice, only prolonged their agony during their algae bloom. We've all been there and we stay because it makes pool care so much easier and affordable. Makes it easier to spend our money on what we want instead of on...

    Clay soil

If you put the base rails and patio stones (doughboy has you use cinderblock under the main supports) on sand, even if it is in a "bowl" surrounded by dirt, the sand will shift and move, making the walls of the pool unstable. That scenario will also retain water and corrode the wall of the pool.

Ahh, Tawas. Spent a few summers near there. (I remember a lot of sand on the AuSable) Do you know the make and model of the pool? Do you have/can you get your hands on the installation instructions? This will take some time, up to a few weeks if you're doing it yourself and those...
