Slam question

Just started the slam process. I entered my numbers into pool math and added the required chlorine. The process has begun.

Pool water is clear, and fc/cc are both 0 due to draining a bunch of water to lower cya.

Salt is low, but waiting to add that until after the slam.

How long after adding the initial dose of chlorine should I wait to check FC and CC? Pump is running about 2500 rpm, I think (the speed I use to circulate water to the solar heater).

I added the chlorine in the shallow end, in front of a return jet. I assume i should test it in the deep end?

Ph is slightly low (7). I forgot to add some baking soda before the test. Should I do this now? Or worry about it after slam? I thought that low ph is better than high ph for slam, but honestly don't know why or if I misread that.

TIA!

2 hours if fine to wait between doses. Don't do any more often.
Buffer system is fast with FC, meaning doesn't matter where you test. Just use the same place everytime.
Don't add baking soda. That raises TA.
Yes, low pH is better.

For grins, go the the SLAM page. Under "Before you begin" there is a link in the first bullet to a single page SLAM Checklist. Print it out and use it. It is new, and we'd like to get some feedback. Let us know if it helps...Link-->SLAM Process

OK. So, as I eluded to yesterday, I had drained a ton of water from my pool to lower cya. Got it down from 1 billion (exaggerating, but not by much) to 100. Simply can't continue draining due to water restrictions, and since I keep a super warm pool, over 90 for the wife, and prior to my debacle with trichlor last summer (long story) I was forever adding cya as I burn through about 10+ ppm per month, I decided 100 was close enough, and I'll just run my swg a bit higher until it gets in range. Since I drained so much water, and no algae or anything, no cc, everything looked good, I was on the fence about truly needing to slam. Fc was 13, cya over 200 pre drain and fill.

Used pool math and added required chlorine. Got fc up to 31ppm and kept it there all day, and cc got up to 1, so I had a little something in there. By evening, it was 0.5. Decided though, since the water doesn't seem to have much issue and was on the fence about needing a slam, let's just see how it does on an OCLT first before going up to the full 40ppm fc the slam calls for. Went out before the sun came up this morning and FC was still at 31, cc was 0. Water still perfectly clear.

So my question is, do I truly need to slam, since just a single super chlorination seemed to check all the boxes for passing a slam? Or should I call it good and start adjusting salt, ph, and ta? Is it safe to swim in today (going to be over 100 deg) or what fc level should I look for? And with the cya at 100, I'm thinking 7ppm for fc on swg is a good level until it comes down on its own. Is that a good spot to be at that cya level?

Thanks for all the help. Lots of lessons learned last summer, and I'll never use trichlor tabs again.

If your CC was 0, your OCLT FC loss was 0, and the water is SUPER clear, like no cloudy, like this-->How Clear is TFP Clear?

Then you don't need to SLAM.

However, to properly chlorinate you need to know your CYA. Any CYA test that results in a 90 or above, repeat the CYA test starting at #8 here and report result:

Thanks! I hate the cya test (bad eyes). Always question if I can see the dot or not, haha. I ran it myself and it was about 100, but just wasnt sure. Kinda funny, I thought, hey, if i mix half city water and half pool water and double it, this will be a lot easier. I did that, and it came out with 50. So i basically ran step 8 without knowing it, haha. Glad to know I'm not insane. Ran to leslies yesterday as well, just as a confirmation, and they also showed 102. So I'm fairly confident that's where it is now. When i did step 8 before the drain, it still was over 100, so not sure exactly where i started, but it was pretty bad. I fully expect it to be at 85-90 by this time next month, and 80 by July based on prior experience. By end of the season, I'll likely have a sock in the skimmer. For those reasons, and the fact that we have water restrictions, I just went with it 100 as "it is what it is".

I think 7ppm fc with that level of cya was based on pool math, but I will double check it.

Perfect. Thanks! So 7 is the lowest it should get, and I should aim for 10 according to that. Not sure where I got 7.

Not sure if this is the place to report this, but i did double check the app, and it says 5-13 with cya of 100 where the calculator you linked said 7-13. I'll go for 10, but just noticed it was inconsistent.
