Chlorine levels with a Chlorine Tab Feeder.

We're trying to figure out what chlorine levels should be based on cyanuric acid. We have an automatic chlorine feeder where we put chlorine tablets in. Which choice should I pick from your options, 1) the liquid chlorine or 2) saltwater chlorine generator?

What we have is a Pentair Rainbow Model 320.

Thanks!

The liquid chlorine option. But after measuring your current CYA level you may need to switch to liquid chlorine because those tablets eventually skyrocket your CYA. Which test kit are you using?

The reason “in line chlorinator” isn’t an option is that it’s not a recommended method. As BPerry mentions, every puck adds FC, is acidic, and raises CYA. The only thing left behind is CYA and it builds, fairly quickly, to a point where you cannot maintain sufficient FC to CYA ratios.

TFP methods are based upon either using a salt water chlorine generator (SWCG) or liquid chlorine. Neither of these products carry along the CYA, allowing you to keep proper control of your pool chemistry.

We are actually using leslie's testing right now 😅 we're pretty new pool owners. Is diluting the water the only way to decrease cya levels? Where is it cheapest to buy liquid chlorine?

Thanks for your input! Where do you buy your liquid chlorine?

Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, etc. you can also buy it at Leslie’s but it’ll be more expensive. That’s the only thing you might consider stepping into Leslie’s for. Stay away otherwise.

Diluting the water is the only way. Leslie’s might try to sell you a fancy CYA bacteria potion but don’t bother wasting your money. Even my pool store guy said it was a waste of money.

Walmart is cheapest for liquid chlorine for me.. my local store didn’t have any, but it’s free shipping after $35, so that was 7 gallons. I get my Muriatic Acid from Ace Hardware.

This is an unsustainable method of chlorination. Long term, you'll need liquid chlorine or a SWG. For our climate, a SWG is the superior option.

First and foremost, you need a proper test kit. I'd recommend the TF-Pro. TF-Pro with Smart Stir

I think you’ll find the best deal on liquid chlorine at pinch a. Penny. 2.5 gal jugs. You “buy” the jugs the first time then you just swap them out when you run out and pay for the LC only from them on.
