Freeze Preparations (TX, LA, GA, AL, FL, etc)

Thanks for the reply. I don't have the classic "Aqualink." I have an IQpump01. Link below will show you a picture of my equipment. The small black box is mounted on the side of my house next to my pool equipment. The app on my phone does not have a "web" option. I can change the RPM pump speed, the times when it comes on and goes off and that's pretty much it.
I found the freeze protection setting, but the only thing it allows me to set is the RPM Speed of the pump during freeze and the duration of the freeze protection. I don't know if that means freeze protection will only run for x amount of hours or if it rechecks for temp change after x amount of hours. Either way, we woke up to a frozen pool on the morning after the deep freeze.
Here is what I have: Jandy iQpump01 with iaqualink app
It may help if you show a screen shot of your phone app with the freeze protection Settings. It is weird that there is a “duration” setting because freeze protection is to be active while air temperature is below a certain set temperature. The default is usually around 38 deg F but it can usually be adjusted between 32 and 42 deg F. However, with Jandy anything is possible.

Hey Rhonda, if you hit the web button in the upper right hand corner of your app, it should take you to the blue screen. At the bottom of this screen, hit the Menu button, then the system setup button, this should take you to a series of options, one of which is freeze protection, this allows you to change the temp from 34 to 42 F. Hope this helps, I can take some screen shots if this doesn’t work for you.
This is only applicable if you have the RS version of AquaLink and are using the iAquaLink app. The iQpump system is different and uses a different app interface. The iQpump hardware/software was established by Jandy for those that did not have a full automation system such as the RS system but wanted wireless control of their pump.

UPDATE:
It’s been above freezing since Wednesday here in Chattanooga, but my pool is on the north side of the house, so it took a minute to thaw out, and thanks to reading this thread, I exercised some patience. We chose to keep our equipment running through the freeze, but as a Christmas gift our power company gave us 4 hours Saturday morning without power, I had delays getting the generator going and decided to do an emergency drain of my equipment, I already had a shelter built with a light bulb for a little extra heat. We had our pool remodeled this summer (was vinyl, now pebble tec) and one of the reasons I wanted to keep the pool open was to keep my chemistry up to speed as the pool is still curing, basically I paid an a** ton of money and didn’t want to screw up the finish. Long story short, I started my equipment up a little while ago, and much to my dismay, no noticeable leaks and everything appears to be working, I haven’t put it in spa mode yet to test the main drain piping for the spa, but so far so good.

This is my long winded way of saying THANKS to this group for all of your advice, experience and know how, now to the pool store for some chemicals that I will surely need to get the water back up to speed after replacing what drained out.

Well it's snowing right now. I made it through the deep freeze a couple years ago but this past Dec got me good. Not sure what happened but my freeze protection must have stopped working or we lost power over night. I just finished the last repair yesterday. (replacing the impeller in the booster pump for the cleaner. I also had to replumb quite a bit because it busted two valves and a tee. I'm considering draining the equipment pad if we get another deep freeze. I cant rely on the freeze protection.IMG_3052 (1).jpg

I wouldn’t trust it either. That mode is really only for very short duration freezing temps or more mild freezing temperature to get the pool through a day or two of freezing temps. Once it gets cold enough, the water is gonna freeze.

I drained my equipment pad for the first time during our mega-freeze in 2021. It saved the pool but at the time
it was a fairly well aimed shot in the dark for me (but armed to the teeth with TFP knowledge!).

I drained it again this past December, just in case. Knowing, now, how simple it is and how fast it can be done
gives me confidence that I can protect my investment. I really recommend doing a trial run when the weather is better. Glad you’re back up and running!

You can test your freeze protection by using a glass of ice water and placing the air temp sensor in it. Also use an external thermometer to verify the temperature of the ice water.

How does it determine when to kick in? Sensor on the pump control?
Some times I wonder why mine didn’t kick in and other times it does. Both times were above freezing but it’s set to 36 I think.

If the forecast shows anything under 25 for more then a few hours I drain my pool pad just to be safe and turn off the pump

Right. On the newer pumps that are used without any automation. The sensor is built into the pump controller. I am not sure how to test that. Something to investigate or maybe someone else has done that.

My Tristar controller cover is on the pump and is black plastic so guessing the sun may impact it like a car. But in reality a couple degrees won’t matter short term.

Temp sensor. If outside air temp is below 38 it kicks on.

Hi All,

During the freeze, I kept my feature pump running. I noticed a very small leak between the valve and the pvc fitting(see picture) for one of my bubblers. I would rather find a way to fix the leak with a very strong cement adhesive (applied from inside the valve body and on the outside) or some other solution. To cut the pvc fitting out and rejoin would be a bigger job than I would like as the space is tight. Any recommendations (cement to use or alternative solution)?

Best regards

Tony

I have had success with either of these products. Just remember, these are for short term repairs as you do not want to have a major event when you are not home.

My power just went about an hour ago. I put a patio heater over the pool equipment. Temps are supposed to be 30-31 today. Its 30 right now. How many hours before I should start to drain the equipment?
