The husband finally let me take over and I don't want to blow it!!

Yes, I am continuing the SLAM (haven't let up), just panicking over the stains since that's TH's benchmark and I don't want him to make me quit.
Thanks for looking back, I did too, and I guess it seems to me like they got better and now back to the starting point, exceppt now the clear areas are becoming "infected".
I trust you all. I'll just keep plugging.

Finish the SLAM.

Then, after your FC comes down to target level and your water is adjusted to the TFP Recommended Levels for all other parameters, then take a water sample to the Pool Store. Ask them to test your water for metals. Ignore all other measurements and recommendations. Report back your findings and then we can proceed from there.

Good luck.

Today's test results:
@5;45 am FC=16 CC=.5 Added 158 oz of chlorine to FC20
@1:15 pm FC=19.5 CC=1.0 Added 19 oz to FC20
@6:10 pm FC-19 CC=.5 Added nothing....yet
Lookes like I'm finally holding FC! What do you think? What should I do now?

How does the water look?

The real test is dosing to shock level after the sun goes down and the measuring in the AM to see how much chlorine was lost overnight.

The stains which is TH benchmark might be something other than algae related. Is your water clear? I mean really clear, or just so so clear. There should not be any cloudiness at all. If there is, keep slamming.

if its really really clear, do an overnight chlorine loss test. Test just after sun is down. Test again before sun comes up. If you loose less than 1ppm FC, then you are good.

What does "dosing to shock level" mean?

What you've been doing. You measure your current FC level, figure out how much chlorine to add to get you to shock FC and then test again to be sure you got there.

So since you've been going to 20ppm FC, then I'd say you need to get your water to 20ppm FC after sundown and then let the pump run all night. Wake up early before sunrise and test FC again. If your FC is between 19 and 20ppm, then you passed OCLT.

The water is really clear, I'll try and post a picture of the deep end. Its very windy (we actually had a dust storm wind alert on our phones today, we've been having crazy weather) when I took the pic.
Whaddaya think , do the OCULT tonight?

Nope:(.

Missed it by .5 :thumbdown:

@9:15pm FC=20.5 CC=1.0
@5:14am FC=19 CC=.5
.....And I'm running out of R-0871 (ordered last weekend, hope it gets here today cuz I don't know if I have enough for another test.......of course).

I added 38 oz of chlorine to bring it to FC20. Will test again before I go to work at 9:30 am. Continue SLAM and try again tonight? Provided I get my R-0871.

ohhhhh sooooo close.... I think tonight you will be good :) .5 is really really really close but your right, you lost 1.5 total so keep going.. I promise we will get those stains worked out, we just want you to have NO algea and be good from now on :)

Thank you. Yup, nothing like light at the end of the tunnel.....
Just pray I get my R-0871

If you run out of test reagent, don't fret. Just figure an average value of how much bleach you've been adding over the past three days and use that number until your refill arrives.

For example, if you've averaged 64oz of bleach per day over the last three days, then just keep adding 64oz of bleach (maybe half in the AM and half in the PM) until your refill shows up.

It's crude, but it will keep you at shock level.

Ok, that's good advise, thank you for that.
I've read that FC over 20 could hurt the pool, since I've been bringing the FC to 20, would "eyeballing" it still be ok? If the reagent doesn't come today, I'll be "eyeballing" all weekend.

It's been a week now since you first posted this thread. One heck of a ride. When it's all said & done, you'll sit-back and look at your accomplishment with pride ... and so will visitors to your pool. We salute your efforts. :salute:

Thank you, yup, its been a ride! But I have to say, thanks to all of you, my pool (now it s MY pool, I better tell TH) looks a million times better! I've been so myopically focused on the stains that I haven't mentioned enough how great the...my pool looks!! I'm even not afraid of putting my big toe in it:).

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Can't wait to start on the stains, tho

You can swim up to shock level. The primary danger to a pool from high chlorine is bleaching but that only really affects vinyl liners (your pool is plaster) and it only occurs at levels far in excess of shock levels.

I don't have the exact values, but I saw a thread where the poster accidentally went up to 3X shock level (because the poster tried to start the SLAM without a test kit) and they experience some liner color fading. But that was a vinyl liner pool.

You should be perfectly safe until the refills arrive. If you're concerned, then only use 80 or 90% of the three-day average and you'll be fine.
