The husband finally let me take over and I don't want to blow it!!

You can swim up to shock level. The primary danger to a pool from high chlorine is bleaching but that only really affects vinyl liners (your pool is plaster) and it only occurs at levels far in excess of shock levels.

I don't have the exact values, but I saw a thread where the poster accidentally went up to 3X shock level (because the poster tried to start the SLAM without a test kit) and they experience some liner color fading. But that was a vinyl liner pool.

You should be perfectly safe until the refills arrive. If you're concerned, then only use 80 or 90% of the three-day average and you'll be fine.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I think I'll "eyeball" it to FC20 since that's when I noticed the biggest improvement.

At 9:30 am the FC was 20.5 and the CC was 1.5. That was a 1.0 rise in a little less than 4 hours. What does that indicate? I'm pretty sure I tested correctly.

Well, you added 38oz of bleach and your CCs increased by 1ppm. That means the bleach is killing stuff. Once your water is clean, your CCs should always be below 0.5ppm. Mine are typically not higher than 0.4ppm and I will sometimes see them spike up to 0.6ppm after a rain storm or a high bather load but they always come back down within an hour or so.

Keep up the FC!

The CC had been holding steady at .5-1.0, why would it spike like that with nothing else changing?

CCs are combined chloramines, the by products of organics and biologicals being destroyed by the chlorine. Anything can spike them and a 0.5ppm increase over 1.0ppm is nothing.

Your numbers are fine. Just keep on keepin on

I would say that wind storm you had blew something funky into your pool and the chlorine is doing its job, and the fact that you picked up on it and asked the question is AWESOME :)

You are well on your way to being TFP

If I see my CC go up, I know something is going on, and check both my skimmers and search the bottom of the pool. Last time I found a tiny lizard that was on the bottom of the pool, and it had raised my CC from zero to 0.5. Fished him out, raised my FC level a bit...problem solved.

Well I checked the skimmer baskets and oh oh boy, kaka galore. Leaves and bugs from the wind storm and gobs of algae!! I added those nylon skimmer "stockings" and I think upping the FC to 20 really killed algae cuz it was packed with gunk (and I just cleaned it yesterday!)Hooray!! my kit refills are here!@6:00 pm FC=17 (lost a lot of FC today.) but CC=.5Should I try OCLT tonight again?

When I was SLAMMING, I did an OCLT every night. I don't know it was protocol, but here was my thinking: if I check FC at night and bring it back up to SLAM level then it's that much more to work during the night without battling the sun. And I would always check first thing in the morning to track my
Progress and re-up for the day. It was nice to watch the overnight loss get less and less. Just my thoughts.

Success!!

Last night @9:00 pm FC=20.5, CC=.5
This morning@5:20am FC=19.5-20, CC=.5
water is clear
Thank you!!

Do I let the FC level drift back to 5 or 6 before I can do anything about the stains?
What's the next step, take a water sample to the pool store and as for analysis of metals?

:whoot: :whoot: :whoot: :goodjob: I am so happy for you, great job, you made it :)

You can let your FC level drop and also do an OCLT, tonight do a FC test and measure again in the morning, should be the same 1ppm loss fc and .5 cc

you want to always stay above FC of 5 from now on to keep your pool clear with your CYA of 40 Pool School - Chlorine / CYA Chart so shoot for 7 FC at night whenever you get home and see if it stays above 5 the same time the next night.. if at 4fc take up to 8...

You never want to get below 3, the greenies will come back and we do not want that :)

now on to getting these stains figured out.. :) I think you have already tried the puck against them, did it do anything? what about the Vitamin C.. you can take a sample to the pool store and just for fun ask them to do a complete test but ask them about metals in the water, compare what they give you to what you know your levels are and get a good chuckle... post up what they have for metals in your water...

Dakemi,
Good job! Went through a bit of this myself, except I'm TH and Dear Wife was worried about the amount of chlorine we used to completely SLAM. May I encourage you to post pictures again, especially with the pool cleaner, your Polaris 360 in the picture? Judging your water clarity by the last picture with the Polaris, the protector on the tail which is black styrofoam, suggests your water might not be clear yet. The point is, it's not just the OCLT, but also clarity that are used to judge when to stop SLAMing.

oops, only saw your post after I posted these pics. Will get one of the polaris in the deep end.

I'm a little OCD too. I kept my SLAM level up until I passed two nights in a row. But then I had to keep it up a bit longer to get it clear. It took my sand filter a while to get the water sparkly clear.! But GREAT work!! What does TH think now?

Ps. I classify the pool as "my pool" too [emoji6]
