What pH would you say this is?

I would say the same, it lacks the ‘purple’ to be in the 8 - 8.2 range.

Try using one less drop. And an unwinkled white background, the wrinkles add shadows. The second pic seems to have less light but could be image.

I found editing a photo of the comparator really helped me. Like this. Removing the distractions I can see that it lacks the purple.

Thank you! One less drop is a good idea. I have a hard time distinguishing between the color and the brightness of it.

I may have to start looking at just each section individually
I use my thumbs to block off the others. You can cut a template from paper or such too.

And 4 drops definitely works better for me most the time.

I wish there were a slightly more accurate way to measure this!
You only need it to be close, which, with a little practice you will do fine.

There are limitations to the tests, but after a little bit you do get better at it.

There are other ways but they can be even more challenging if you do it properly.

Try making one of these little cards with the window cut out.

I use the Apera Instruments AI311 Premium Series PH60 Waterproof pH Pocket Tester Kit. It's a digital meter and quickly gives you a very accurate reading. Cost is around $80 from Amazon. I calibrate it about twice a year. I've been using this for the past 5 years and never had an issue.
