Pump HP question for Hayward S200 Sand Filter

Hello, I currently have a Hayward Super Pump with a single speed 1.1 THP motor and I am looking to upgrade the motor to the Century VS EVC165 motor which is 1.65 THP. Are there any concerns with using this increased horsepower with the S200 sand filter?

I was watching a pump replacement video and it was mentioned that too much horsepower could damage the laterals but I'm unable to find anything else that confirms this.

You are installing a Variable Speed (HP) motor on your pump. Check the impeller sizing to be sure it is correct.
Thus, just limit the max rpm to 2500 or something in that range and that will limit the flow rate through the filter.

The kit I linked comes with a 1.5 THP impeller. I assume that's the correct one?

My concern is that this motor only has a limited number of preset schedules and they all start with a 3 min prime at 3450 rpm and most start with an hour or two running at 3450 rpm or close to it.

Use Schedule Set B California schedules, Schedule 6 and you should have no problems.

I reached out to INYO Pools support for their opinion and all they really said was "should be fine".

@mknauss Any opinions on the preset schedules or do you concur with poolman? Here is the manual:

I have Black & Decker 3HP pump and run priming at 2500 RPM, but I tried @3450. The pump becomes rather loud at that speed but nothing bad happens.

Installed the new motor today. Few questions:
1. Any issues reusing the power cord from the old motor? (Not hardwired)

2. I noticed a small chip out of the seal plate where the shaft seal sits. It's not leaking now, but should I replace the seal plate just to be safe? Pics attached

To be safe and for piece of mind I would, but I think more in terms of a repair for a customer that I am now responsible. The area of that chip isn't really in the sealing area, that's the perimeter of the rubber cup. OEM seals on StaRite pumps didn't have a cup for the ceramic to sit in, but an O ring around the perimeter of the ceramic.

If the old cord or plug isn't damaged, or the sheath stiff, its fine to re-use. A stiff outer sheath will eventually crack.

Is there an easy way for me to calculate how much electricity I'm using with the VS schedule compared to my single speed motor?

I ran the single speed for 8 hours/day and the recommended schedule now runs for 18! Hours at a few speeds. Trying to figure out how much this saves over the single speed given the additional 10 hours of run time.

Why? You run the pump for a reason. First is to create (SWCG) or distribute (liquid chlorine). Next is to skim the surface. Likely your 8 hours from before, if you were satisfied with that, would suffice. Put the pump at 1500 rpm and see if it skims. If it does, set it for 8 hours and see how it does. Unless this motor is one of those you cannot change the schedules.

The power use is likely about 20% of your single speed, give or take.

As discussed earlier in this thread, these motors only have predefined schedules and the one recommended by @1poolman1 is 18 hours of runtime. If you think a different schedule would work better, I am open to experimenting. I linked to the manual with schedule options in an earlier post.

1725RPM doesn't seem to be quite cutting it - not getting very much skimming.

Would switching the return to a smaller nozzle and/or partially closing the skimmer using the restrictor plate make any appreciable difference?

Also, wanted to confirm that its expected for my pressure to drop to about 2.5psi at 1725RPM? Pressure at 3450RPM is around 17psi.
 
A smaller nozzle would reduce water flow. That would not help.
So you are not getting debris in the skimmer basket? You do have a weir door, correct?
Low filter pressure is good.
