I've been putting off cleaning my filter since opening. I cleared an algae bloom at opening. Last week or so, my SWG wasn't as full as it should have been. I turned the heat on and had the pool covered last week. A couple days ago I noticed the clarity was off. I swam for an hour. Covered it n went to bed. Today I uncovered a cloudy pool. So I ran full test results and cleaned the filter.

pH 7.5
TA 80
FC 0
CH 150
CYA 0
SALT 2700

Have no idea where my CYA went? Had 40ppm end of April n added 2 more lbs. It's registering 0 today. I added 4 gallons of old liquid which brought me up to 6ppm today. I would rather use it than dump it. I'm going to throw another bag of salt in and order fresh reagents. The kit was inside all winter. I'm thinking I didn't have enough flow through the swg due to the dirty filter and with the water being warmer it was the perfect storm
to create an early Bloom that I caught. I've got CYA in a sock now. I'm going to check my FC to see if it's increasing here in a bit.20230511_143220.jpg20230511_143225.jpg

Why Does pH drop When Treating Ammonia With Liquid Chlorine?

Oxidizing ammonia creates acid by releasing hydrogen.

More than 95% of ammonia is in the form of the ammonium ion (NH4+)

2NH4+ + 3OCl- --> N2 + 3H2O + 2H+ +3Cl-

When adding 12.5% sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine) to a pool to oxidize ammonia, every gallon of liquid chlorine will create the equivalent of 15 ounces of 31.45% hydrochloric acid.

10 gallons of 12.5% liquid chlorine added to 25,000 gallons of pool water with ammonia will lower the TA by about 23 ppm or the equivalent of adding 150 ounces of full strength 31.45% muriatic acid.

Every 8.53 gallons of 12.5% liquid chlorine is equivalent to about 1 gallon of 31.45% acid.

0 CC @JamesW . It's weird. I'm going to order a new kit n check it.

@poolnovice1I do not have a leak nor an autofill.

Maybe an odd chemical anomaly, or you caught it just in time before it became a monster. If it were me, I'd add about 10 ppm of liquid chlorine first though, before adding CYA, and re-test the FC just to ensure there's no huge drop in FC after 10 minutes. If the FC is holding relatively well then all is good and move forward. If the FC crashes, you know there's something weird happening, and test the CC right away as well. Hopefully the FC holds for that 10 minute drill and you can press-forward with your season.

The pool looks better already @Texas Splash ! I went down to put the cover on and it's clearing up. I'm going to retest it tomorrow. I'm off and I have to replace my solar cover so tomorrow is pool maintenance day. The site glass is full of water on the swgnl now too. I think I ignored cleaning the filter for too long and the swg suffered from it. I actually searched why my swg wouldn't work on here and it said, could be a slow air leak. I took it off n lubed the o rings. I checked the plates. Tightened all my unions and I saw someone say, clean the filter so I did n it immediately fixed the low water in the swg.

Pool is crystal clear. Haven't checked the numbers but cleaning the filter and boosting they system has turned it around. I only added 4g of chlorine for 6ppm yesterday. I did sweep it this evening. I'll check the numbers tomorrow.

We've come a long way since my intex in VA sooo many years ago huh 😂😂😂
Yes we have. I've been doing this since 2007. It's pretty amazing how you can clear a pool in less than 24 hrs. I just checked my FC and I'm at 14ppm on 90% and CYA of maybe 10-20. I put more in and it dissolved pretty quickly (sock in skimmer). Have more going in now. The old man's tube sock only holds so much.

I just ordered my refills. Thinking about adding another bag of salt to get over 3,000. I'm at 2,700 right now. Probably do a half bag. I have probably one more cya test. Gotta cut grass and put new solar cover on.

How do you like that solar cover reel? Is it the VINGLI on Amazon?

Also, do you like your solar cover, if so what do you have?

Thanks!

Love the reel! I just put a brand new cover on today. 20230515_111824.jpg

My CYA disappears occasionally. I went from 160+ at closing with a threat of draining and refilling at opening. To my surprise was 20 when I opened. Now seems to be stabilized at 60 after raising and dropping a few times and also slamming twice. No idea what was going on other than some weird bacteria that may have been consuming it. Never had combined CC over .5. For adding the CYA, I have found that a 5 gallon paint strainer bag works awesome. I put the CYA in it and then put the strainer with CYA in an old skimmer net and hang it over the edge by a return. Works great.
