When you get your test kit, test your fill water. Knowing the CH, TA and pH will give you an idea of what adjustments you'll need to make in the future.
If you avoid solid forms of chlorine (trichlor/dichlor/cal-hypo) and find a way to top off with softened water you may never have to drain your pool.

Note the readings on your water meter before and after filling. Subtract average household water use to determine the volume of your pool.

If the builder gives you test strips, throw them out. The only good thing they did for me was made me find this site.
