I am replacing my MasterTemp 300KBTU heater. Can you suggest a thread about this and the virtues of DIY versus "Certified" installation along with warranty implications?

If you are very comfortable dealing with the electrical, gas, and plumbing aspect of the job, a direct replacement is one of the easiest installs there is. There are many good online videos about how to do it.
As for the warranty, this is directly from Pentair's website:
TradeGrade products must be purchased from a retail store (brick & mortar), pool builder or pool service company to receive a one-year, two-year or three-year warranty. If purchased online will only receive a sixty-day limited warranty. View the list of TradeGrade Products.

Ecommerce (EC) products: Products purchased from an Authorized Pentair Online Reseller (products beginning with EC-) receive a one (1) year (parts only) warranty from the date of purchase. The exceptions are: IntelliChlor cells and IntelliFlo SVRS pumps which receive a two (2) year warranty. EC products are not eligible for the bundled three (3) year extended warranty.

Very simply if you purchase the MasterTemp on your own and DIY install it Pentair gives you a 60 day warranty. So if you do that don’t let the heater sit around after purchase. Have it delivered and you install it and use it during the 60 day period. After that you are on your own to resolve any problems.

Pentair has a liberal definition of “Professional Installation “ for warranty purposes and you may be able to do a DIY install with Pro help and review that gives you an invoice to present and get warranty coverage.

You should be comfortable working with gas, electrical, and plumbing and know the local codes you should meet. It helps to give a comprehensive reading of the MasterTemp Installation Manual. Your current installation may not meet current codes. NEC now requires gas heaters to be GFCI protected.

Savings can be substantial as Pool Builders costs can be 2X the cost of the heater.

Finding it difficult to locate a 300K BTU heater I brought in my gas contractor and he told me my service would support the 400K unit. He will do the gas connection and replace the regulator valve. I was able to find the unit
on Amazon and they offered me a three year warranty. I will respond agin when it is in place and running! Thank you for the information I have received!
