Spring Conversion Baquacil to Chlorine

More than anything I’d highly suggest the OCLT as I suspect you’re tinkering with being done. I don’t think you’ll pass just yet, but I’ve been wrong on a few other items during your conversion.
I agree, I feel like it close but still a couple days off of done! I am still getting small pieces of gunk in the pool so I still have some clean up most likely.
Thanks for the help!

Wow, This water is amazing! It is so clear, it‘s indescribable! The led pool light even on the blue which would never penetrate very far, lights up the steps and the other end of the pool, I guess that defines CLEAR! AMAZING!

I did FC test this morning at 3am , checked it twice just to make sure and it was at 13.
I fell asleep watching College Bball after the big Razorback Win:kim: so I never checked after the addition of bleach at 8:30 last night to know for sure what the FC level was at that point but assuming it was close to 15, it was very little overnight loss!

We redefine peoples definitions of it on the reg. It never gets old. :)
That’s awesome! It is a good feeling to see MORE CLEARLY now :)

Quick question for the morning, I do have a thermal pool cover that is a lot easier than putting on the main cover. Any opinions on using just the thermal cover that sits on the water? I do believe it makes it pretty dark underneath that should block the sun and warm the pool a little at the same time.
I can do either way, easy or not. What do you think?

Lots to do today but here’s a quick run down of what has happened. This is the very quick version for now.
Friday I basically maintained FC 15 for the morning to start the day.
Mid day to around 6pm I maintained around 5 ish just to stay safe while sun was overhead and directly on pool.
Midnight FC @ 12 so add to top off and get FC 15 and no add for the rest of night.
Saturday (today) 7:30 am FC 13.5 - 14 took 3 samples to be sure and thats where I was this am. Good but not perfect!
Saturday by 12:30 with no add since 7:30am - FC had dropped to 4 , added 36 oz chl to target 6ish and will add a little through the day to
maintain enough to stay at least FC 3 -5.

First off the water looks amazing! My thoughts are that the 1 to 1.5 FC loss Friday night was possibly due to the Baqua…gunk…goo..crud that still remains in some amount in the sand filter so in short, I think it’s time to change the sand, maintain FC 3 to 5 until sun goes down and before bedtime take FC back to 15 and check for loss Sunday morning.

Thoughts or advice?
Any tips also on sand change would be helpful since this will be my first by myself.

Thanks in advance!

You’re headed into the “long battle” part of this war. It’s going to dog you everyday. Sometimes your overnight loss will be so close to 1 and then it will 2 or 3 and make you feel like a failure. This is literally the hardest part of a conversion. Keep your eye on the prize and your cooler full of beers.

Don’t add a lot of chlorine during the day. The sun is eating it up more than any residual baquacil. Sundown is when you want to hit it hard. Backwash the filter and keep it clean. Don’t worry about the sand change until you hit your FC loss goal. Get the light out of its niche and clean that out. Pull out any ladders. Brush the pool walls down to the drain. It’ll happen, you just gotta believe …

You’re still seeing a good bit of chlorine loss to go changing the sand just yet. Odds on favor say there’s still some goo floating around the bulk of the pool that will get trapped in the sand and really “gum” it up. Baqua-Goo is a very sticky material and if you change to early you’ll clump up the new sand.

Brush the heck out of everything. Focus on cracks like around the skimmer, eyeballs, ladders, steps, and lights. I even took a toothbrush to mine to really get everywhere. You’re close……but not there just yet.

Sounds good, so during the heat of day with solar cover on the pool, should I not worry about FC level at all? Then bring it up at night?
Thank again!

Don’t let it get below 4-5 or else you risk giving yourself an algae fight on top of a bacquagoo fight … like fighting a war on two fronts, not a good idea.

You’re on your way!
When u get ready for sand a shop vac is your best friend. If u don’t have one - work on procuring one. There’s lots of YouTube videos on how to get it done. Be ready to inspect laterals, gaskets etc. & scope out a place to get replacements if necessary so u won’t have any down time.

Thank you,
I have shop vac’s. I have watched a few videos on YT and I also watched as the local pool place changed sand last year and opened the pool so that does also help a lot. Great idea on checking on a few parts. (y)

Saturday night: Started the addition‘s of bleach again to bring FC back up close to 15 made the last add for the night at 10:15pm, checked at 10:45pm- FC 14 , checked for over night loss at 6am-FC 12.5 Sunday morning which would be at least 1.5 loss.

Sun started getting overhead and bright so checked again at 8:30am-FC 6 and again at 10:30-FC 3 so I added 36 oz bleach at that point to get back to around 5 and will maintain around 5 until the sun goes back down. Solar cover is being put on while sun is up!

Yeah, like @mknauss said, after you change it for the baquacil conversion, you will never have to change sand again. Pool stores always sell customers on sand changes claiming that the sand “gets old” or “contaminated” … it’s all BS. When pool chemistry is properly maintained and the sand filter is deep cleaned annually, the sand lasts forever.
