Help! Gray spots on stairs.

Can anyone help me figure out what this is? Not sure if it is algae or deterioration of the pool plaster or something else. Thanks!

It appears like that is the gunite. How old is the plaster? Is it rough?

Please, go to <Settings>and fill out a signature line giving us information about your pool. Size, type, equipment in use, how you chlorinate and finally how you test your water.
Can you provide us with a full set of test results? Do you fill with city or well water? How old is your plaster?

Thanks for the responses. I'll work on getting the signature updated. Just bought the house and moved in in January. Not sure about age of the pool, but the house was built in 1991. And yes, the plaster is quite rough like a coarse sandpaper.
