Optimal settings for my situation? (24k gallon, sand filter, IntelliPro Vsf, solar on home)

Hi, TFP.

Please help me set my flow rate on a schedule that will keep my energy bill down and my water clean.

A few pertinent details:

  • I have solar panels on my home
  • My time of use pricing with PG&E means 4-9pm is "peak pricing"
  • I have a spa spillover feature, but nothing else
  • My pool filter is a Hayward S244T
  • I believe our pool goes from 3ft in the shallow end to 8ft in the deep end, though I am not certain since it was there when we bought the home.

I just had a new IntelliPro installed and have been running the following schedule:

  • 6am-1pm | 35gpm
  • 1pm-4pm | 27gpm
  • 4pm-9pm | 20gpm

So far it seems to be working really well, but I don't want to leave any potential savings on the table, so I'd be glad to hear your thoughts on that schedule. What do you guys think? What would you adjust given the details above? Any help is appreciated!

And yeah, ditching my old pump (well... it died on me) was probably the best thing to happen to my pool. It's been about a week since we got it installed, and the water is absolutely beautiful. I should have switched out the old single speed pump long ago!

Why not turn it off from 4-9pm?

the pump speed only needs to be high enough to skim the pool surface to your liking. Find out what the minimum speed is to do that and use that speed for 99% of the time. Then set your spa splillover to run for 15min a day to make sure it gets chlorinated water.

You only need to run your pump for a purpose... Sounds to me like you are trying to meet some mythical "turnover" number.. Just so you know, having to turnover X amount of water per day is a myth and just not true.

I run my IntelliFlo at 1200 RPM, most of the time at 1200 RPM.. Not sure what that would be in GPM... :scratch:

Since you don't have a Saltwater Chlorine Generator (SWCG), then you only need to run your pump long enough to skim your pool water the way you like..

I personally run my pump 24/7 because I have a SWCG and I like for it to be making a little chlorine all the time, and I personally like skimming all the time.. I can run 24/7 for less than $20 bucks a month.

Indeed, I was shooting for some mythical turnover figure. How big is your pool? Running it at 1200 rpm consistently would be great...

If you go back and look at the very bottom of my post, it has my Pool's Signature which tells you all you need to know about my pool and equipment..

If you go to Setting, then Signature, your pool can have a signature too... :mrgreen:
