So, I have been taking care of me pool for 7 years, so have a pretty good knowledge ( thanks to this forum !). Anyway, I have always tested 2 / adjusted everything two times a week, until this year - I have let it slip and not done it for 2 months. I just tested and apart from my zero CYA ( I am used to that dropping - I have to increase it from below 30 to 80 about 4-5 times a year) , the PH reading was really ORANGE. I have not seen that before, so what does that indicate? I was expecting deep pink and I have not added acid for 8 weeks. THX !

You are sure it is the pH and not the OTO chlorine test, right?

Orange is not a normal color for the pH test. Take a picture and post it.

What is your FC level?

Post a complete set of tests...

FC
CC
Ph - ??
TA
CH
CYA

I see light pink/purple as 7.5 (100% matching test vial)
Light Orangeish is 7.3 to 7.4
Yellow below 7.2

I do color correction for a living.

That does appear much darker orange than I've ever seen.

Ok, So still balancing after an overnight test two nights ago.
FC - 9
CC - under 0.5
TA 90
CH 500
CYA 40 ( it was zero 4 days ago, so added a BIT, but not raising it up to 80 until I have passed another overnight test. As I have done that in the past - passed test, raised to 80, then got algae 4 days later and had to SLAM at FC30!)

Right , I have been testing pool 2-3 times per week for 6-7 years ( except slipped this year , hence all work getting it right ) , and never seen that before.

I think your pH is in the high 8's.

How old is the reagent?

That is odd, I have added about ( pour from the bottle , do not measure ) 6 cups of acid in, in last 2 days.
I buy the large reagents - this one is actually in date - 05/21
As a side note, my 16oz containers for 0871 FAS is 08/19 and 0013 CYA is 05/20 ( I do a LOT of CYA testing as I probably have a leak and it drops below 30 5-6 times a year). How far past expire date can you typically use the various reagents? thx

The red one. Do not have to hand. Same kind I have used at least 400 times before.
The reason I ask there are two strengths, one for the 7 ml block in the K1000 kit and one for the 44 ml block in the K2006. You cannot substitute them. For your block, you need R0014.

I push reagents for an extra year. But if the results start getting wonky and not passing a reason ability test then it is time to get fresh reagents.

I would get fresh 871.

Have you cleaned and rinsed your test block well?

Run the pH test on your tap water and see if you get a normal color.
