You might have to step up and do it on your own and tell them to stay away :(
I suggested that to start with and it caused at stink at the PB. Not sure why. Today I can see the bottom again (yay!) but we still have a funky blue tint to the water. Reminds me of this stuff. Much better clarity than blue Gatorade but still not right.

I'd really like to know what they put in the pool yesterday so I better know how to proceed but my guess is they didn't track it. If they can't let me know by mid morning, we will start treating it.

Right now, I'm not positive our equipment is running properly yet. They are doing a poor job communicating the status of the panel, their current work around, and what I am able to do without impacting it. I will be trying agin today to get that information.

They have to sign off on anything done for warranty purposes. Even if it’s wrong, it’s their say-so. IMHO you are in a situation where what they don’t know won’t hurt them. If they show up and find the PH/FC balanced, Then my goodness, they were right !!! Their treatments worked !!! (Wink wink). If the pump isn’t running just mix the stuff around with the pool brush so it doesn’t settle in one spot on the floor. Give it few minutes between brushings. 2 or 3 times should do the trick.

That is a great idea, thank you so much! They will be here in about an hour to discuss the travertine issues so I will try balancing it after they leave.

The owner came by today and agreed with us that the leveling work on the west side of the house did not meet the contract criteria. They will put us on the schedule next week for additional grading. This is great news. Once that work is done, we can finish the drainage and grass the area around the pool. We're making progress!

Added 2 quarts of muriatic acid and 2 quarts of chlorine to the pool tonight (at separate times, thanks to the Pool School for teaching me the proper handling). Pool math said we should add 8 lbs of CYA and we only had 5 on hand so we dissolved 2.5 lbs tonight and added it to the water near the deep end. I'll add the other 2.5 in the morning. With the skimmers off and restricted pool flow right now I didn't want to do the sock in the skimmer thing. We will do that when the skimmers are running.

So, here's something interesting...I've read the Pool Chemistry forums several times prior to today so I thought I knew how volatile Muriatic Acid was. I wore eye protection, gloves, held the bottle well away from me, etc. What I didn't realize is that because I live in a really humid area, the acid can actually react with the humid air and create a cloud of noxious vapor. I didn't have a mask that would protect me properly from that so I would measure, back off and breathe, repeat, then go to the pool to pour. The instructions say it should take over a minute to pour but that didn't work when it was turning to vapor so I just dumped it, waited a couple of minutes then brushed that area really well.

We'll be going through a lot of acid since this is new plaster so I'm going to have to figure out a better way to handle this. In the past I would have gotten one of those M95 mask things but with the pandemic they are hard to find and I'd feel wrong to get one anyway when other people need them. I've been searching TFP through the google search tool but haven't hit on any suggestions. If any of you know of any good threads for dealing with muriatic acid when living in a super humid area, I'd appreciate a link to it.

Have a good night!

Lay the pool brush in the pool next to where you'll be pouring so you'll have it ready. I don't wait a minute before brushing. Stand upwind, if you're measuring it out do it quickly and hold your breath. You can easily just put the jug in the pool and tilt if its a lot that you need. Don't over think this and don't go over board with the PPE- a recent post on this topic showed how dangerous that actually can be as it removes your natural protective instincts.

2 quarts is half a gallon. You think you can pour close to half out by feel?

I don’t measure MA. Open the jug standing by the edge of the water. Pour the approximate amount directly into the water and recap. If you want, wait 30 minutes or so and retest and see how you did.

Do it a few times and you will get the feel of how much to pour. This does not need to be very exact.

The less you handle the MA the better.

This is really good feedback, thank you. I was attempting to put in, down to the ounce, what Pool Math was indicating I should use. I will be less precise.

So this is probably the ultimate newbie question but I've searched Pool School, Pool Math and the site and am having trouble finding the answer. I apologize in advance if this should be transparent and I'm missing it.

In the PoolMath app, I can log FC and CC. My daily chlorine test is TC, the weekly test is CC. We're using the daily OTO chlorine test. Today it was 1.5. I'm not sure how to log it in the app so I can keep make my daily adjustments. Do I log it as FC?

What test kits are you using?

You need to using the FAS/DPD Chlorine Test for TFP methods ...

OK, we were using the basic OTO to test chlorine and didn't understand how to log the result in the app. I understand now, we should not use that one for PoolMath. The test kit indicates the basic OTO test is daily. I am guessing I need to use the FAS/DPD daily instead?

The OTO test just tells you that you have chlorine or not. You can't reliably get a numeric value from it. After a while if you do the OTO test with the FAS/DPD test you will learn what color is good. Once you know your pool you can check the chlorine with the pH and if the color looks good then move on. If the OTO color does not look good then get out the FAS/DPD test and find out the actual number.

Use the FAS/DPD test daily until you learn your pool and see the patterns. With a SWG once the SWG % is dialed in then the chlorine check is just checking the SWG is still working.

Thanks, Allen, that was what I was missing. Really appreciate the assist. We have tested with the FAS/DPD test and will retreat. Chlorine was non existent yesterday and we're at 1.5 today so we're heading the right direction.

Remember that based on your CYA level, your desirable FC level may easily be greater than 5, which is where the OTO test tops out. So if all you want to see is if you're "above 5" but not concerned with exactly how much.....sure...use the OTO test. But you first have to recognize that you won't know an exact number to chart, nor if you have CCs. But its handy if all you want to do is confirm "yes, I know I'm above 5" and that's enough for you.

Hi All, Nothing new on the build at this point. We are still waiting on the panel to be installed and grading on the west side of the property. There are some additional pool related items they will install when they get the panel running.

We have a tropical storm headed our way that will likely be a grade 1 hurricane when it hits. We searched the forums and read through all the posts for how to handle hurricanes and I have a question about the FC. @SuzfromTexas has a great thread that recommends bringing chlorine to SLAM levels when we expect huge amounts of rain. This is new plaster and I understood from TFP's Pool School we should never SLAM new plaster. I'm guessing there is a happy medium here somewhere for us?

Based on the 2" in the pool rose yesterday, we have already drained off 3" of water. Our FC dropped to .5 when it should be 6 for regular chemistry. Pool Math app said it would be 20 for SLAM. We are bringing it up to 6 now and I'm thinking we should wait until the rain really starts coming down then bring it to maybe 9 or 10? We're expected to get 1-2 feet of rain. Any suggestions? I am happy to post this elsewhere, if there is a better location.

Thanks in advance!
