Glycerin PSI gauges from TFKits

I recently purchased a glycerin filter-pressure gauge from TFKits.net. I notice what I perceive as a larger-than-usual air bubble (see 1st photo), rendering it a bit difficult to read. Does anyone else think so, or am I just overinterpreting a typical size?

Secondly, the gauge screws on well enough, but before it seats completely, it runs into the gauge housing of my Hayward Perflex DE filter. [see 2nd photo] (The one it replaced had a fairly smaller face.) I put some extra teflon tape and screwed the gauge as far as it could go, enough to apparently stem any obvious leaking, but was just wondering if this wasn’t baiting trouble.

So I have this filter at one of my sites and the original gauge went bad. I replaced it with a similar glycerin gauge with the exception of the threaded connector on the bottom (bottom mount) like at the 6 o'clock position. I wound several times with Teflon and got it tight with the orientation of the face sideways before the crome rim came in contact with the black casing. As far as the bubble I have 4 of them all the same way and works very well.

That gauge DOES require that bubble. It's supposed to be there to function properly.

As far as the mount, can you remove that housing? If not get a small extension at HD/Lowes so the gauge doesn't touch the housing.

BTW, hand tight only when screwing that gauge on and don't put too much teflon tape on it 3-4 turns is fine. Pipe dope works, too.

That housing removed leaves a large hole almost the size of 1 1/2 pipe so that won't work. I originally did as duraleigh suggested but got away going straight in being that the gauge is round it cleard and still got it in enough not to leak. If you go to big box store or a hardware make sure to buy only brass and you'll need a short 1/4" nipple say one inch and a brass coupling.

Thanks for the tips. I actually only wound the Teflon tape 2x, and it seemed to do the trick. We'll see.

As wireform noted, removing the housing ain't an option. I'm curious about the extension: I can't seem to find it online at either store. Is it called anything else in particular?

HD/Lowes will have what you need. You get a straight 2" x 1/4" npt threaded brass extension. I would consider a brass 90 on the end of that to turn the gauge facing up......might be easier to read. In short, you make your own fitting from 1/4" npt threaded pieces.
