BaseCrete for the entire pool?? Is this an industry standard practice? My initial thought was/should be for waterline and wet tile areas. Plaster would act as a water sealant for the rest of the pool surfaces?

Yes, the whole pool. Plaster isn't actually waterproof - it does a good enough job but could be much better. Just look at how many people have issues with the rebar rusting through their plaster....

The other huge advantage of basecrete is it acts as a bonding agent between the shotcrete and plaster and is relatively flexible so it allows for some expansion between the shell and plaster. The two materials typically have different compressive strengths and dissimilar expansion characteristics (3-5000 psi for shotcrete and 7-10k for plaster). Add in the waterproofing characteristics and you got yourself a great product.

I used shotcrete for my new construction pool and at the point of applying pebble plaster. @MyAZPool what are your thoughts on this? @John_and_Val did you apply a waterproofing like Basecrete? Would plaster applicators/companies turn away if a waterproofing like Basecrete was applied or asked of them to apply prior to applying the pebble plaster?

Thanks for asking but questions regarding applying this Basecrete is out of my league. What I would say is, that we should direct your question to someone who has a lot more experience with this sort of stuff than I.

Brian, chemillion has just had his shotecrete completed and he has a couple of questions regarding this basecrete product and whether or not he should consider using it before his tile and pebbletec is installed. He is somewhere there in your neck of the woods I believe.

@chemillion Do you have your tile installed already? I am using Jeff Lucas...

From what I understood the waterproofing has to go throughout the shotcrete shell underneath the tile. Unfortunately we have already installed tile. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

That is correct. That’s what Bdavis is saying. Who do you have doing your plaster? If you haven’t plastered, it may not be too late. I’m not sure what the specs require in the thickness of the Basecrete application, but if it’s less that 1/4” then you may still be able to apply it with a final flush finish plaster & tile.

Plumber came by today and installed all the equipment and electrical!

I was a little concerned that the heater and filter are not bolted. Is that normal?

Next is fence and then plaster!! Cant wait!

Yup. Here is a picture. We have it on both sides. Not much of a bolt, but it was enough for inspection.

Just read this nightmare story for parents or anyone with a pool and little ones around. Luckily this ended well!! It really hit home for me.

I know I have been caught up with the excitement of the build but this is a reminder not to lose sight of the importance of pool safety.

It's a really scary reminder of how vigilant we need to be.
