Buying pool chemicals

In my signature below, you will find a link to "Pool School"....
Read it through.
We use the CHEAPEST/BEST methods of keeping a pool clean!

Most of what we use is available at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, farm stores, etc.

Most pools need liquid chlorine/bleach and muriatic acid. Also cyanuric acid aka stabilizer.

There are no magical potions that cure all pool problems.
With a bit of reading on the site, you might find the answer you are looking for.

It is also important to compare like for like. If grocery stores sell regular bleach, no fragrance, no splashless, no additives for $2.60 with 6% sodium hypochlorite (bleach), it is just as effective as going to a pool store and buying liquid chlorine at 12.5% (sodium hypochlorite) for $5.20 a jug. In fact the grocery store bleach may be in a jug with 121 oz, and the pool store jug is 128 oz.

For chlorine, I buy at my local mom & pop pool store. Your mileage may vary.

My chemical list:
Cyanuric acid (Puri Tech brand on Amazon) $2/pound. STABILIZER
6% bleach (Walmart) $1.77/gal (prices vary by region) CHLORINE SOURCE
20 mule team borax (Walmart) $4.47/65 oz box. ph UP (and for for optional borate treatment)
Super washing soda (Walmart) $4.12/55 oz box. pH UP
Muriac acid (Lowes) $9.98. pH DOWN
Baking soda (Walmart) $0.50/lb. ALKALINITY UP
Snow Joe Melt calcium chloride pellet (Walmart online) $28/50 pounds (you might not need calcium, I have a heater and gelcoated fiberglass steps and need it). CALCIUM SOURCE

We need your signature completed.

In other words, bean, sometimes quality doesn't come with a fancy name or hefty price tag. Just get chlorine, stabilizer, baking soda, and borax from wherever you can source it.

You can literally get all this stuff from Wal-Mart for less than $25. And it's good stuff.

Be wary of home depot muratic, it's half the concentration of Leslie's muratic so even though it is a bit cheaper for the two gallons you're really getting half the equivalent amount. Leslie's is pretty expensive for everything but I've found they're the cheapest for muratic. Always look at the percent concentrations when comparing

You may want to double check, Home Depot sells HDX muratic acid 31.45%, 2 gallons for $12.98. If you buy four cases it drops to $11.68 or $5.84 / gal.

The MSDS on that link states 28.5 - 29.5%, so barely less than the usual 20 baum/31.45%? A couple months ago I switched from buying the 2-packs at Lowe's to buying the 2-packs at Home Depot and haven't noticed a difference. I still need half a gallon every 4-5 days. But I didn't know about the buy 4 discount at HD, I don't see that in store, I wonder if it's an online only thing?

Just bought some bleach from Menards. Their “Solutions” brand is on sale right now for $2.49 and, although not listed on the bottle, this regular concentrated bleach is listed on their website as 8.25%.
If available, you should buy Pool Shock at Menards before the end of this week as it is Buy One, Get One free through 7/6/19 and stronger concentrate than laundry bleach and less expensive.

FYI, I just checked the Toledo North store and it shows that have around 250 gallons in stock. Other stores appear to have quite a bit more.

I happened upon this thread while searching for CALCIUM CHLORIDE.
@Steve_in_C (or anyone else) can you tell me the exact CALCIUM CHLORIDE to get? Wal-Mart has quite a few to choose from.... any suggestions? I need to add quite a bit according to PoolMath.

Thank you!

You don't want either of these. From what I can see they both contain other stuff in addition to calcium chloride. This is probably the one and only time you want something with extra "P" in it for your pool.

Better yet for you is this at Menards. Not sure what store you are close to but quite a few of the stores In the Milwaukee area show available stock however I imaging it would be in overstock at this time of year so you will have to ask someone to help you find it.

Here is what I have bought in the past which has worked out well for me. The 50# bag is by far the best deal but appears to be OOS at the moment.

Also on Amazon for quite a bit more money

Here is an old TFP thread with some additional information.
