Greetings Everyone,

Our pool maintenance company came to diagnose why our control panel was completely off. They diagnosed a faulty circuit board and quoted me around $1,600 to replace it. Well, I found it for under $500 (Hayward GLX-PCB-BRO) and wondering if I can replace it myself. They quoted $275 labor to install it, or they'll charge me a $135 diagnostic fee. Is it worth the savings to try it myself? I'm assuming it's as simple as:
  1. Turn off power to the system
  2. Take pictures of where everything is connected
  3. Install new board
  4. Turn on power
I don't know anything about configuring the system once it's back on, so that may be another issue. This is why I'm leaning toward paying them $275 to install it and configure it.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to TFP... A great place to learn all about how your pool works... :shark:

I know nothing about Hayward, but with a Pentair system, if you replace the main board, it will suck the programming from a remote and reprogram the main board.

I would buy the board and install it and see what happens.. If it does not come up, you can always have the pool company come out and reprogram it..

Not all pool maintenance companies are the same, so tell us why they believe the main board is bad???? At first glance, "Completely off" does not sound like a main board problem.

Hello Jim -- thank you.

I will try installing it myself and will report back here.

Directly from their email, "Just a note to advise of the diagnostic for the equipment that mal-functioned this past week. Our Technician contacted Hayward when he came out to inspect why the equipment was not running, and they diagnosed that you have a bad control board. The Tech wired the filter pump directly to the power source, and the pool is running so it does not turn green. However, it will run 24-7 and you will not be able to control anything."

I guess Hayward helped them diagnose it. I called them to check the system when everything stopped working. The control panel was off and unresponsive.

I found this diagnostic video on YouTube, tested it, and I guess the board really is bad:

Also, this may be unrelated but the temperatures got very cold over the past couple months and perhaps the water froze in the system, causing something to burn out on the board. Any thoughts?

Check the yellow 20 amp fuse.

Check to make sure that you have 120 volts going to the board.

Did you turn off the breaker going to the board and turn it back on?

What test did you do to confirm that the board was bad?

Hi James -- thank you.

I will check that fuse with a multimeter to be sure because it looked fine visually.

I confirmed that there is power to the board. Based on the diagnostic video on YouTube that I shared above, I need a new board.

I did toggle the breakers a few times. No response.

In response to your new question, please go to 2:30 on the YouTube video above. That's my issue. The control board is blank and unresponsive. I followed those steps and the part that's failing is the step at 3:03. I checked pins 1 & 3 and got DC readings all over the place from 2-6.

Any ideas?
