I could use some opinions on tile

I recently got a quote for re-tiling my pool. I have two things I'd love to hear feedback on:

  1. Am I asking for trouble going with smaller 1" tile when it comes to cleaning and long term care (vs. 6" tile)?
  2. Is it dumb to get tile trimlines on the steps for a residential pool?

The guy that came out to quote me said that 1" tiles are more expensive to install and much harder to keep clean. He seemed to be heavily discouraging me from going with smaller tile and was pushing 6" tile.

He also looked at me like I was an alien when I said I wanted a trimline on the steps. He said they are required for commercial pools but has never had a request to do that on a residential pool. I think they look really nice--am I crazy??

This is the type of tile that I think looks really good for the water line as well as the trimline on the steps:

Both are VERY common to residential pool builds. Look SO pretty AND the step markers make it safer as they help everyone see where the the steps start and end.

As for cleaning..........if you follow TFP care guideline the clean will be a non-issue. It is when you do not have properly managed water that you have problems with cleaning the tiles.

Why is he pushing you to the 6"????? They are so much easier for him to install correctly as well as faster. That is the long and short of it. He is trying to push you to what is better for him  Saying that......if he is not comfortable and does not really want to install them I would have someone else do the work. You do NOT want someone working on something they are not good at or do not want to do. Better safe than sorry for this one!
