This is exactly as I imagine although my 6 year old is very switched on and will likely offer to jump in to retrieve it the second I mention there’s a rock in the pool!

Up to 27*. Ugh this is a little slower than I anticipated! Glad we upsized! Yesterday’s weather turned nasty in the afternoon. Temp dropped right down, drizzle and a cutting wind. Today we have beautiful blue skies. The kids have their school fair today so I see coming home for a swim on the cards! Seemed to gain quicker without the cover so going to take that off test the ph then dump a bit of acid before we go. Chlorinator is working properly now but struggling to keep ph in check on full acid dosing. I’m just going to add acid until the plaster settles down.

First swim! It turned cold and overcast again this afternoon. The boys didn’t seem overly interested in swimming when I offered. Now I can’t get them out!

I’ve just run another set of tests. My water is still looking very average but granted it has only being two days since things were sorted with the acid dosing chlorinator. I also realised that the auto dosing acid will likely not be enough to keep up in the curing stages. So plan on manually dosing either by hand or through chlorinator to keep ph down. Did so today and it sat nicely on 7.5. Will do this for a few days and see how it’s looking.

The main number I want to tackle right now is the CH. Its been low (TFP low) since start up. I haven’t adjusted it yet but want to. Can someone please confirm to me that I am shooting for the 350-450 pool maths tells me I need? My pool start up guide says 200-250. I have some calcium whatever it is to bring it up (I have checked it’s the correct stuff just can’t remember the name) that was left here after start up.

Current test results:
FC - 5
CC - 0.5
PH - 7.5
TA - 150
CH - 225

From previous testing:
CYA - 90
Salt - 6400
Neither my fault!

Might try and bump FC a little manually as it’s on the lower end. Really aiming for 7 ish I think.

Liz, I am going to refer you to this: http://www.nptpool.com/sites/nptpool.com/files/NPC_SwimmingPoolStart-UpProcedures.pdf

Read it real close (I had to read it a couple of times to really understand what they were saying) and note what they say about CH.

What was your CH fill? Has it gone up? CH is another one you have to remove water to "fix" so I don't want you to get too high on this.

TA-with you having to add so much m.a. for the PH your TA should come down. Now if you want it down faster you can. Here is a link to that: Pool School - Lower Total Alkalinity It is a process the boys can help with LOL Need to get the ph up??? OKAY boys it is cannon ball time!!! TA is the last thing we adjust so do it you want.

Once you plaster stops pushing the PH up then we will work on finding your pool's purrfect TA/PH ratio.

Thanks Kim. Will have a good read of the link tomorrow. It’s very late here. Definitely do not want another number irreparably too high.

I had sort of expected TA to have dropped a little already given how much acid has gone in but it’s exactly as it has always been. Will look back a full numbers for both values tomorrow.

If it was mine, I'd leave it alone. There's several numbers working together to balance the water relative to the best numbers for your plaster. pH, TA and temperature have the greatest effect, and CH, CYA and salt all have a bit less effect. Your water is in the perfect range now because TA is a bit high. TA will drift down from the acid additions, but slowly right now because the curing plaster is contributing TA to the water. After the TA comes down, I'd reconsider adding a bit of CH. In the meantime, targeting a pH of 7.6 would be technically a bit better, but it's OK at 7.5. If you stop heating and let the water cool to whatever nature delivers, that might also be a trigger to add some calcium or let your pH drift up to more like 7.8

So short version is... TA is a bit higher than TFP range, so it's OK that CH is a bit lower than TFP range.

That’s exactly the sort of thing I have no idea about so I really appreciate your input. Will leave the TA and CH alone and aim for 7.6 ph. This will be a bit easier to maintain. On a side note at the school fair yesterday I had one mum tell me how her pool which is two years old likes the ph higher but that all pools are different. Thinking she was going to tell me it liked 7.8 or so. Nope. Her pool likes the ph at 8.4 - 8.6! Quickly ticking off in my hear whose pools I don’t want my kids swimming in [emoji23]

Do you think I just need to be patient with my water clarity? It’s kind of bugging me how terrible it looks. It’s certainly much better than it was but falls short of TFP water by a long shot.

Did you find any de to add to the sand? That will help your sand clear it up faster. Have you backwashed yet? I can't remember. If not I would do so. Make sure to read the directions. I did not and did not rinse after my first backwash.

Thanks Kim. I was just thinking I probably need to backwash. It has only being done one and that was at handover last Tuesday. Went to do it but wasn’t certain on a couple of things so chickened out. Will watch the Astral you tube video again! I probably could get hold of some de but right now back washing is one thing and pulling my filter apart is another!

Liz you don't have to pull it apart! You add the de to the sand! I am on my phone so can't do links. Do a search for adding de to a sand filter. Make sure you can be there to babysit it for a little while to make sure it does not shoot the pressure too high.
