Using a PB in Vegas

I have been studying my links from Kim and have printed out several pages. I even have a notebook for recording the tests. I am nervous to start, but excited to get to the point where testing is like second-nature. I can't wait to get home and tinker with the kit! Should I test my fill water already?

I remember getting a box that looked mostly like that..you got more goodies than I did though..:)

I'm looking forward to seeing how close your fill water tests to ours, which was pretty good, but has high CC out of the box. The key thing is going to be keeping the PH in range. My monster is eating 1/2 to 1 gal of acid every other day. Best place I've found to buy it is just about anywhere has the same price on the same concentration. So, I've just been hitting lowes or home depot when I need more.

Lots of updates! I have been a naughty TFP'er, again. :cop:

Tile has been installed, the equipment pad was reconfigured, and the yard was graded and poured. It's so nice to have a semi-clean backyard again! Things are really starting to come into focus.

They will spray the two-tone deck on Friday, pre-plaster inspection on Saturday or Monday, and hopefully plaster on Tuesday. Assuming the inspection goes well, of course!

We had a couple bumps with the tile. The 3 spillways on the spa radius were not spaced evenly, so they had to chip it out and redo the tile work. Not fun for them I'm sure, but we bought lots of snacks and goodies for the guys that day. They had to wait to pour that part of the spa until after the tile work was complete, which is why it is still setting up now. And they also installed some hand-holds on the spa and raised wall. I guess by code they need to be there to help people get out of the pool if needed. They did a great job making them out of the tile. I am in love with our tile choices; they came out better than I imagined!

Here's where I need your help/guidance. Originally, we planned for a medium gray/blue colored plaster. I was finally able to see the color in person last weekend, and I hated the streaking and mottling present after only 1 year. So, I either go with white plaster or upgrade to Pebble Sheen. The upgrade is almost $4,000, and at this point I am already well over our original budget. We have the money to spend, but I'm not crazy about spending it.

Pros of white plaster: The trim tile will show up well, I will get a more uniform color look inside the pool, it won't retain as much heat, cheaper (I will actually get a credit back from the PB!), and smoother (I am always wearing socks or shoes or slippers - hate to be barefoot)

Cons of white plaster: I'm not sure if my pool will look good. I made my tile choices based on the darker color plaster and darker water color. Not as long-lasting as Pebble Sheen.

Pros of Pebble Sheen: Beautiful water color, longevity, more luxurious look

Cons of Pebble Sheen: Rougher surface than plaster, more expensive, and I'm not sure how it will work with the trim tile I have selected. Will it be as blingy with the pebble? I hate to think about wasting money, and I probably would've skipped the trim tile if I was installing Pebble Sheen from the beginning. Plus, I think they installed the trim tile with white mortar (or whatever it's called), so would that look funny with Pebble Sheen surround?

I realize that this debate is so subjective, but any pointers would help. Just when I think I've made up my mind, I flip-flop. I have to decide soon....

And now pictures!

When we re-plastered several years ago, we took an in-between option called Quartz-something. This is a good enough description:
Aggregate Effects - Colored Ceramic Quartz

Another highly innovative addition to the palette of surface options has been the use of special colored ceramic aggregate products. These aggregates are basically a very specialized form of ceramic-coated sand that comes in a variety of pre-mixed plaster products.

Strengths: When combined with white or colored plaster, aggregates afford a broad range of colors, from vivid blues and reds, to more subtle hues such as beige or soft greens as well. It also has the advantage of creating, a much more durable surface than standard plaster, one that is harder and far more resistant to fluctuating chemical conditions.

Concerns: Again surfaces using aggregates are more expensive than standard plaster and can also be susceptible to some surface problems, especially in the presence of extreme water chemistry conditions.

It won't hurt to ask if that is an option.

We do have a bit of molting, but I consider it personality as opposed to a flaw.

Starting off here is the best choice of all though. The knowledge to keep your chemistry right is the best choice you can make for whatever surface you go with.

All together now.................oooooooooooooooo, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, sigh..............SO PRETTY!!!!

The white plaster will look awesome with that tile! The lighter color water/plaster will REALLY make all of that time POP big time!!!!

I always wanted a grey plaster. For a lot of reasons we went white with added black stones. It got as close as you could get without going grey. You can see pics here:

I am happy with it. But if I had unlimited budget and no kids with sensitive feet, I'd go pebble sheen blue surf. But our choice is a good option without having dye based plaster or a dark color that will more easily mottle.

You're the best, Kim! Thank you. I am so excited (and HAPPY) to be close to the end.

Thank you! I am checking into the quartz option now. The upgrade is only $800, so a little more palatable for sure!

Thank you so much! Your pool is stunning and I would be lucky to get a color close to yours. I am exploring adding black quartz to the white. They will only add up to 33% for integrity purposes, so I'm not sure if that will give me the same look. I am going to view a blue quartz showroom pool on Friday, so hopefully that will give me an idea.

I'll second the quartz plaster. Ours is white plaster with blue specs. I'm very happy with it and think it turned out amazing. There are several pictures in my build thread if you want to take a look. You're almost finished!

Thank you, IMAZ! Can you do me a favor and get a close up shot of the plaster on the sun shelf? I'm trying to see just how many specs you have compared to others. I appreciate you!

Ours is a Quartz based aggregate as well. It's from premix marbletite's Marquis series in Sapphire color. It is a white based cement with blue stones. Similar to diamond brite super blue and Florida gem blue gem. Then we added black.

Unfortunately by the time I got home the wet deck was in complete shade and it was hard to get a good picture. The second one is the wetdeck. The dark area on the bottom is a shadow from me. It's not blotchy at all. The second picture is part of the hand hold that was still in the sun. Hope this helps.

I think either way you go you would be fine. I will say that if you don't go pebble quartz is the way to go because you can still get all your "character" and you can get the color you want along with a long lasting product. Also applied correctly you have less chance of mottling. IMAZ pool plaster job is EXTREMELY consistent and you can see it in his build thread.
I will say this though, is pretty sure if you negotiate you can get your builder down to around $2400 for the mini pebble upgrade. Let's just say just how I knew who your builder was is the same way I know they can come down from 4K ;)
Your pool is coming out amazing so either way your going to be fine

Hope this helps.

Super helpful. Thanks so much, IMAZ! My husband and I just love your pool.

Aww, thanks Big Will! We're going to need to setup a TFP Vegas Pool Party at your place once everything is finished... !!

And I think I have squeezed every discount out of the builder at this point. lol :) We will most likely go with quartz.

Heres a a picture of the wetdeck in full sun. Thanks for the kind words. I know you said you are going to look at a quartz pool tomorrow, I should be home most of the day. If you and your husband are in the northwest part of town and would like to stop by and see / feel in person let me know. I'll PM my address.

So sweet of you, IMAZ! My husband saw the quartz pool this morning and of course fell in love with the Pebble Fina one he saw. Oy! I'm going to check the quartz one out later today, and I'll definitely PM you if I the one I see isn't enough. Research, of course... :p

We have gone back and forth with the quartz vs pebble. My wife likes he quartz cause it's very smooth. I know to get pebble smooth it gets pretty expensive?

Right now we r using diamond brite super blue. It was mentioned to be to maybe mix some French grey in with it but it was from another builder and I don't want to go there with my builder if he hasn't dealt with it before.

Ours will be white based plaster also with the color coming from the aggregate. My wife didn't want that deep deep blue color so why we should be safe where we r. Not too windex color but not deep though. It's a total shot in the dark though.

I really like ur contrast with the waterline tile and markers. I got to keep showing my wife marker pics. Cause I want them more and more now.

Jimim, have you seen Steve's build? He has DB Super Blue and it looks great. After acid wash it looked like a grey base. Water color is so nice.
