    Should I raise Alkalinity

Makes total sense because my pool's happy place seems to be 60-70 TA and 7.6-7.8 pH. Rarely get over 80 TA (90 max) and below 7.4 pH. I quit worrying about keeping my TA in the 80-120 range since I'm usually +/- .03 of zero.

    Should I raise Alkalinity

Exactly right...I get it and I was. Guess I didn't mean odd as confusing, but just odd that it was something totally different than what I was used to. I literally had 8 gallons of acid that my PB left after the build that never got touched for 3 years.

    Bleach/liquid chlorine suggestion

Thanks guys! But the bleach I was using from multiple places prior was plain bleach with supposedly no additives. However, my results from then and since the change show that was not the case since that was simply the only change I made from what I was putting in my pool, hence my post about...

    Should I raise Alkalinity

I'm the same way.......but once it gets to that reddish level you mention, just add acid. Personally, I don't even measure anymore, just pour maybe a pint or so for mine, sometimes more, and gets it back in line. Sometimes mine will get down to 7.2, but usually 7.4 then settles at 7.6 for a...

    Bleach/liquid chlorine suggestion

Been a while since I've posted here.....mainly because I learned how to handle my own pool with this website with fantastic, clear water results and not a hint of problems or algae over the last couple seasons. But did learn something inadvertently I'd like to share......and maybe is well...

    Should I raise Alkalinity

Totally agree and great point......after a couple years of this, I've noticed the difference from before is my PH wants to go up and my TA wants to fall, unlike before. But my TA always likes to settle in the 60-70 range pretty quickly, which is fine as long as my PH is sub 8, which keeps me in...

    Tabs question

Thanks Tim!! That's exactly the info I was looking for. I've got some room with my CYA levels now, but based on that info, I'll probably just reserve their use solely for when I'm away or unavailable and/or use them as a means to raise CYA when need be. And it's no wonder my CYA levels were...

    Tabs question

A little background.....I know tabs are the devil and I came over to the TFP side about a year ago after having high CYA and all the problems it causes due to their excessive use over the previous three or so years. After draining about 40% of my pool and going with TFP's methods, albeit with a...

    I use pool store testing

Been on both sides....put in a pool 4 years ago, went with the "pool school" my PB offered which was basically tabs and shock. Worked great for about three years. An occasional algae outbreak, but always shocked into submission.....until last summer. Algae got to the point that it was no...

    Jandy LED light not working

Had some friends over last night and went out back to chat by the pool. When I turned the light on, it worked at first, but was very dim and finally went out completely. GFCI is fine, but reset several times just to check. When I turn it on and operate it as usual with my PDA, I can hear it...

    Help with waterline tile!

Beautiful tile. We went with Iron Gate by NPT which is very similar in color. Maybe a predecessor? Basically the blue with the natural earth tones mixed in. We love it and goes well with our very natural pool design and environment of the backyard. Was going to upload a pic, but for some...

    Northlake, TX New Pool Build

Definitely no reason to "close" your pool here in Texas. I have freeze protection too and I generally run my pump from 8-10 AM to 6-8 PM in the swim season, then switch to running it overnight (coldest temps) for 6-8 hours after around Thanksgiving or so through the winter just in case...

Pool Builder Bids in Dallas, Texas

Great advice from kimkats. Wish I could give you advice on those specific builders, but haven't heard of them. We're in Tarrant County and got 6 bids when we built ours, but it seems that a lot of the area builders pretty much stick to certain areas. Like Kim said, I'd suggest getting as many...

Question about combining SWG with trichlor for larger pools

I'll weigh in since I'm relatively new to the TFP methods and came because of high CYA from pucks and that I could no longer keep chorine in the pool, although it took 3 years of constant pucks to get there. After having been using bleach for the last several months, I probably won't ever go...

about to sign contract; would love some feedback

Ours is 3.5'-5.5' and we love it. But to Maddie's point, ours is a gradual slope. So the 3.5' is just the starting point right up against the edge. Get 6' or so away from the wall in the shallow end and you start getting closer to 4' and so on. Only thing we would have done different is...

    Frequency of adding bleach question

Great.....thanks for the tip. Not near as much sun now versus a month or two ago due to angle of the sun, where the trees are, etc. Definitely plays into why I'm not using as much TC. Just easier and more convenient to add every few days instead of remembering every day.

    Frequency of adding bleach question

Been on the TFP method for a couple months now and think I have it down pretty good except for a few minor things I'm having to adjust to. I've calculated I get 1 ppm of FC per 20 oz. of 8.25% bleach. Was using close to a gallon a day when I first started, but the pool was getting a lot of use...

First Time Owner Build in Dallas

Nice choice on the tile! Love the blue color of the other one, but you've got that color along with others and the contrast will look great.

Should I push back on my contractor?

My pool is only slightly smaller than yours and I can't imagine what it would be like with only one skimmer. We have two and they are needed. We have trees like you.

    Automation and design help please

Can't be of much help re: the plumbing and intricacies of such. I just left that to our PB. I'm sure someone with expertise will chime in. I can say however that our pool is roughly the size of yours (16x33' 14.7K gallons), we do get some partial shade during the day, and we have never had a...

Did your PB talk you into anything you regret?

I have an inline chlorine tablet feeder. And even though I no longer use it regularly, I'm glad I have it because I will use it during those times when I'm traveling for work or on vacation for enough days that I can't handle the bleach application. Tabs are bad all the time, but serve a...

    Texas Completion Laws

Not that I'm aware of. I know ours gauged 8 weeks from dig date, but could change due to weather, permitting and other issues that could arise during construction. It was in summer and the days were long with not many days lost to weather. Plus our city is really good about inspecting at each...

Just getting started in Frisco, TX

Congrats on the dig date and looks like a great design! On the PBs slamming each other, that really rubbed me the wrong way when I got my bids. Had a couple of them who basically that was their whole shtick, like they were the only ones around who knew how to build a pool and everyone else was...

Our neighbors expect an invitation to swim...

Man, I feel your pain. The neighbor thing has never been an issue with us. Some of the neighborhood kids "invite" themselves to come swim through our kids on occasion. But that's not a big deal and we allow it as long as we're out there too sometimes. Other than that, we invite other...

    White film on water line

Glad this was posted......I have been on TFP methods for a couple months now with great results for the clarity of the pool, algae, etc. Love the simplicity and ease of keeping my pool in balance and looking great. But I have had the same white film problem on the pool tile above the waterline...

Post what your pool cost you to build...

Man....that seems high. But SO hard to compare from market to market. Mine was $35K, 16x33, 85 ft. perimeter, 450 SF surface, 14.7K gallons, 500 SF of paver decking, pebble plaster, flagstone tanning ledge and coping and a 15' moss rock water feature. But it's in Texas (cost of...

What I would do different next time.

-Would have made the depth 3.5/4/5' or 3.5/4.5/5' instead of the 3.5/4.5/5.5' we went with. -Would have continued the bench we have in the shallow end to go all the way underneath our water feature, adding about another 15'. Other than those, can't think of much we would have changed without...

SWG vs. chlorine -- any reason NOT to do it?

Pretty new to the TFP methods, but something's not adding up. My pool is about 15K gallons and currently I get 1 PPM of chlorine per 20 oz. of 8.25% bleach. And yours appears to be over 5-6x that amount, albeit with a 25% or so larger pool. As far as the salt system, every contractor that...

New Pool project in Miami Florida

Good questions.......I considered this route for mine as well and decided against it and I'm glad I did. I might have saved $2-4K (35K pool) had I done it myself, but it would have been a total pain personally and would have taken a lot longer. Plus there's a lot of things they know and are...
