Will Draining Water Help With Algae?

Remember, the CYA does not change in a short period of time (several months) unless you drain off alot of water and replace with fresh water or add CYA containing products. Have you done either of those things since your last test?
No. The only change to the water between the two tests was adding the PH reducer. I guess you could consider that the pump was running for an additional few hours before the 2nd test.

Maybe I just misread the first (or 2nd test)? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thank you! I just added the PH Reducer, so I'll let that circulate for about 2 hours, then test the water. If the PH level is 7.2, I'll begin SLAM with adding 4 gallons of LC.

You mentioned keeping the pump on 24/7. My current schedule is: 2800 RPM for 9 hours, 2200 RPM for 10 hours, 1800 RPM for 3 hours. I need to add 2 hours somewhere in there... maybe set the 1800 RPM mode for 5 hours overnight?
No need to run at all the different speeds but fine if you do. Yes try to run 24 hrs or close to that.

PoolMath effects of adding
Lower ph before increasing fc to slam level as the ph test is not valid at fc levels over 10ppm.
This is what I did. Started at around 7.9 ppm, and lowered it to 7.2 ppm. So I should be good there 👍.

I added some LC about half an hour ago. Hopefully the process has begun! 🤞

Update: I began SLAM last night. I realized I left my CYA level in the Pool Math app at 35, so my target FC level is 14 (I may need to adjust). Here are the results of my first 3 checks:
  • Initial Starting Point
    • FC: 1.5, CC: 0
    • Initial Dose: added 360 oz. LC (per Pool Math instructions) on 5/2, 8:15pm
  • 5/2, 10:30pm check
    • FC: 15, CC: 0
  • 5/3, 6:30 am check
    • FC: 12, CC: 0
    • Added 58 oz. LC (per PM instructions)
    • Also brushed and ran robot vacuum
  • 5/3, 10:30 am check
    • FC: 14, CC: 0
According to PM, I'm at my target FC level, so I didn't add any LC at the 10:30am check. The sun started hitting the pool around 10:15 am, so it should be completely in the sun by 11:30 am. Am I ok not adding any LC for now until the 2:30pm check? The water looks clearer and there is definitely less dead algea on the floors compared to yesterday, however it's still pretty green, and I can't see the 8ft deep end.

Good job, just a couple of comments.

1. Round up your CYA from 35 to 40
2. At a CYA of 40, your target SLAM FC is 16
3. Anytime your FC is below 16, raise the FC to the target. Drifting lower than the target may still kill algae, but will prolong the process... and ain't nobody got time for that.

Thanks! I upped the CYA to 40 and added 58 oz. LC. I’ll check the water again at 2:30pm.

How long should I expect SLAM to take? I read that’s it’s different for everyone, but is there a general rule of thumb (e.g. 24 hours, a few days, 1 week, 2 weeks, etc.)?

You need to plan on at least a week. I am concerned about that slug in bottom of deep end. The more you can remove of it, the better.
Also maintain the FC at SLAM level and brush will continue to help kill and remove algae.
Suggest you take a picture of your pool at the same time each day - you already stated you saw some improvement and barely 24 hours into it. Looking back at the pictures will help you see the daily progress.

It really depends on effort & how bad to start. I will say in my case. I started on 4/22 and am still SLAM today but I'm close to completing.

Wow, so you're on day 12 now. How long did it take for the water to start clearing up? What was the FC level you had to reach?

What do you mean by the "slug in bottom of deep end"? The fact that the bottom isn't visible? I'm fairly confident that the vacuum got almost everything down there. There was barely anything to begin with. Once I partially drained the pool, it actually cleared up to the point where I could see the bottom. I manually vacuumed to waste what I could, so there were no large chunks of algae, leaves, debris, etc. Since then, I've run the robot about 6 or 7 times. Hopefully the combination of all that has helped.
